What to expect
To deeply experience the essence of Chinese culture, Yan Wai Yan is an unmissable destination. We use the world-renowned masterpiece "Dream of the Red Chamber" as a blueprint, breaking the boundaries between the stage and the audience, transforming the entire hall into a Qing Dynasty aristocratic mansion. You are not only a guest, but also a "character in the play," guided by dancers in splendid costumes to participate in a moving narrative that unfolds around a family feast and the fate of the characters. Each exquisite dish, cooked on-site, corresponds to a twist in the plot, allowing you to perceive the ups and downs of the story with your sense of taste. This is not just a meal, but a completely immersive and tangible journey through Chinese art.

An amazing experience that was even better than I imagined! The food was delicious and similar quality to michelin level fine dining and the quantity was shocking with me and my partner being full by the 7th course. The performance was also lovely though at times hard to follow as someone who wasn't familiar with the plot of Red dream chamber (would recommend reading a synopsis before). The hanfu was also very pretty with detailed embroidery and the attendants were very helpful in selecting it. It was fun taking photos in the courtyard though to be honest it was very hot and a bit uncomfortable so we mostly took pictures inside the dining room (which was air conditioned). I went on my birthday and they gave me a bottle of wine, cute gift bag with little trinkets and made me a part of the performance with an extra set of dessert! Overall would highly recommend!!
I made a sudden decision and contacted them via WeChat the day before, and they readily accepted my request. Since I was traveling alone and had an outfit, I also asked for a photoshoot. I thought makeup and hair styling were included in my order, but they weren't, so I paid extra at the front desk to have them done. There were many beautiful outfit choices. They selected and styled my hair and makeup to suit my face and overall look. Afterward, I posed as the photographer instructed. While I was taking selfies before dinner began, they showed me the retouched photos and asked which digital photos I wanted. Many of the photos were even better than I imagined, so I purchased additional ones. Then, I returned to the dining hall and thoroughly enjoyed the play and banquet (dinner) in my costume. If I had known that 'Dream of the Red Chamber' was a famous Chinese literary work, I would have read a synopsis beforehand. Nevertheless, since the play was entirely in Chinese, I used AI to interpret it during the performance, which allowed me to understand and enjoy the content. Between acts, the lights came on, and we could enjoy our meal. I believe there were over 10 delicate dishes, all traditional Chinese cuisine. Through the food, as well as the play and costumes, I gained insight into Chinese culture. I had already experienced this package once, and it was so wonderful that I would love to experience it again if I have the opportunity.
This time I participated in the lunch + show + costume makeup experience. The show was fantastic! It used dance to express inner emotions. The most memorable were the actress playing Grandma Liu and the actress playing Jia Baoyu's sister. As for the meal, the first few courses were quite good. The later dishes, the fish seemed to have been pickled in salt and were a bit too salty. The food wasn't that hot either. But the plating and tableware were very carefully done, which is commendable. I felt the makeup was a bit rough. There wasn't time to choose clothes either. Personally, I think if you participate in this activity, focus on watching the show and having lunch. Because the garden for the costume change and photo session is very small. The value for money isn't great. It would be better to participate in the costume change and photo session at the National Palace Museum. The National Palace Museum is bigger and has many more photo spots.
Food not bad, 9 courses of chinese cuisine. Got stage acting, just that the immersive experience on the plate to introduce the dishes wasn’t great as the image too blurry.
Excellent place- the ambience, staff and performance. Presentation of food was good, taste wise- regular. Do opt for the make-up and costume, will add to the experience and make it more fun.
Excellent! The food was delicious and plentiful, and the performers were fantastic. All the staff were lovely. I recommend arriving around 5 PM; that way, you'll have time to get ready and take photos in the garden before the food and show start at 7 PM. Overall, I loved it! 😍😍
Honestly best value for money and a unique cultural experience. The show had beautiful settings, great performance and vibrant costumes. The food had good variety. Thank you to all the servers, chefs and performers. Great show!
Stuff were very polite ane helpful. I had trouble with the wechat mini programme and staff was able to set reminder and help me with the seat reservations. Its an entertaining and exquisite dinner that marks the end of our Beijing trip! Well done!

This show is definitely worth seeing; even if you're not familiar with the story of "Dream of the Red Chamber," it won't detract from the experience. The food is also delicious and filling (for an average person's appetite). It's a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. If you have the means, I recommend purchasing VVIP seats for a better view. I stayed at a hotel in the Second Ring Road, and a taxi here cost about RMB 16.
