We had a lovely day trip, and Nikko is absolutely beautiful. Our driver got us to all the main sights efficiently, making it an easy and enjoyable way to explore the area. While he didn't speak much English, so there wasn't a lot of conversation, he was pleasant throughout the day. One thing to be aware of is the additional costs. The road tolls ended up being much higher than we expected, and when combined with the per-kilometre charges for exceeding the included distance, the final price was significantly more than the original quote. We also needed to pay these extra charges in cash at the end of the trip, and having the exact amount was a little difficult. It would be helpful if these additional costs were made clearer in advance or if card payment was accepted.

During the trip, the driver only served as transportation, with no additional services like sightseeing commentary or recommendations. You'll have more flexibility if you plan your own itinerary, but travelers unfamiliar with Japan should do their research beforehand. For lunch, we went to a restaurant recommended by the driver, but the prices were higher than expected, and there was an additional 10% service charge, payable only in cash. Concerned we wouldn't have enough cash for the return trip, the driver thoughtfully took us to a convenience store to exchange currency. Additionally, even though we only went over the allotted time by less than 10 minutes, we were still charged for a full hour of overtime. We also didn't do our homework to check the total distance between attractions in advance. As a result, we were charged an additional 8,000 for overtime and an extra fee for exceeding the mileage limit, plus tolls. In the end, each person actually paid over 4,000 New Taiwan Dollars (including the cost of this package). Given this experience, I would recommend that others consider their chartered car package instead. For the same attractions, the final cost per person would only be a little over 1,000 New Taiwan Dollars. Alternatively, consider the chartered car service if you have a larger group.

The car was luxury but not the experience! We stopped at Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrin for a view of Mt. Fuji , Lake Kawaguchiko Oishi Park, and Oshino Shibokusa where we stopped for lunch, then some lake to see swans. Asked for recommendations for local food. Driver suggested a place that served eel, shabushabu, and bear claw! The quality was subpar, eel did not look grilled and was mushy. Quality did not meet the price tag of 26,000 JPY. While moving between locations, he was constantly looking at texts and not focused on driving safely. Seemed like he was looking for directions to the next location when he had time during our stops. Apparently he was texting his supervisor (?) Be weary of additional costs for delays. Our trip was cut short 2hrs to mitagate for traffic; from the Mt. Fuji area to our hotel was 1.5hrs. Route back took 5 hrs which cost an additional 20,000 JPY! You’re better off renting a car to explore the area so you’re not rushed and bamboozled with additional fees!
