Luggage Storage
High-speed trains between Beijing and Shanghai offer convenient luggage storage options for passengers. Overhead racks above the seats can hold small to medium-sized bags, similar to airplane cabin storage.
For larger suitcases, designated luggage areas are available at the ends of each carriage. These spaces are unassigned, so it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot.
Additionally, passengers seated in the last row of each cabin can store bags behind their seats, providing extra convenience.
Unlike air travel, there are no strict weight limits, but passengers are generally advised to keep luggage under 20kg for easy handling. We'd recommend keeping your valuables close to your seat for security.
Ordering Food on the High-Speed Rail
Passengers on the Beijing to Shanghai high-speed train can conveniently order food using the QR code located on their armrest. This digital menu offers a selection of meals, snacks, and drinks, which can be delivered directly to your seat.
However, to place an order via QR code, you’ll need a local Chinese phone number for payment processing.
If you don’t have one, don’t worry! Train attendants frequently walk through the carriages with food carts, allowing passengers to order directly from them using cash or card.
Food options on the Beijing to Shanghai high-speed train are limited and fairly plain, with simple meal sets and drinks available. While they are convenient, they may not be the most satisfying.
A great alternative is to buy takeaway food at the train station before boarding. Both Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao stations have a variety of restaurants, including local Chinese dishes, fast food, and even international options.
How to Board (and Upgrade) Your High-Speed Train in China
Once you arrive at the station, you’ll first go through security and bag checks, followed by a passport scan. The process is straightforward, just allow a little buffer time in case of queues.
If you’re hoping to upgrade your ticket, you may head to the Customer Service counter before entering the boarding area. If an upgrade is available, they’ll handle it on the spot.
