Fantastic 5.0
Our driver and guide, Joseph, was very professional and responsible, and even took us to explore some extra views. We were so lucky to have clear weather today and saw sperm whales, dolphins, and seals!

Great 4.0
The whale watching activity was canceled due to bad weather, but the tour guide seemed inexperienced and unable to arrange and execute a backup plan in a timely manner. When we stopped along the way, they also didn't announce the meeting time. Luckily, the group members were quite good and didn't cause any delays. The guide did provide some brief commentary along the way, and there was someone in our group who didn't understand Chinese, but the guide hardly used English to accommodate them.

Fantastic 5.0
Our tour guide was incredibly enthusiastic, taking us to Tongue Point, a spot very close to the sea lions. The itinerary was well-planned, and even though the road conditions weren't the smoothest, we felt completely at ease with our guide. You definitely shouldn't miss this!

Fantastic 5.0
It was a choppy ride with gale warning and high chance of sea sickness. Thankful that the ride proceeded and we got to see marama and tiaki whales and a school of dusky dolphins and fur seals

What to know before visiting Kaikoura

Kaikoura’s top things to do across the year

Kaikoura is best known for outdoor and sports activities first, with tours a solid second — the busiest bookings cluster toward November while demand dips in September. Expect activity throughout the year, with notable peaks in late spring that shape when people plan ahead.

What kinds of activities suit different travellers

Families often choose tours that offer a range of options and the widest price spread, making it easier to find something family-friendly at an entry-level or mid-range price. Couples looking for memorable experiences will be drawn to outdoor and sports activities for their scenic and active appeal. Solo travellers and small groups can find flexible tours and outdoor options that suit varied budgets and energy levels.

What travellers from the Philippines usually book ahead

Most travellers from the Philippines keep plans flexible — many bookings are made around a month ahead, though the earliest planners book around two months before travel. Booking ahead matters most in the peak month of November, when demand is noticeably higher and popular activities can fill up.

How the main categories compare on price and fit

Tours are the easiest way in, offering the lowest typical price point and the widest spread of options, so they suit travellers seeking variety or tighter budgets.
