Rent a car in Takamatsu
Convenience and Exploration
Renting a car in Takamatsu offers the freedom to explore at your own pace. With your own set of wheels, you can easily visit popular destinations such as Ritsurin Garden, less than a 10-minute drive from the city center, or drive across the Seto Ohashi Bridge to experience the scenic beauty of the Seto Inland Sea islands.
Vehicle Inspection and Rental Agreement
Upon receiving your rental car, perform a thorough check for any pre-existing damage and report it to the rental agency to prevent any future disputes. Document the car's condition with photos or videos. Familiarize yourself with the rental contract, noting details like mileage allowances, fuel policies, insurance inclusions, extra charges, and driving area restrictions. Remember to refuel the car before returning it to avoid higher charges from the rental company.
Child Safety Requirements
In Japan, child passengers must use appropriate car seats: rear-facing for children up to six years old and booster seats for older kids. Confirm with the rental agency if they provide car seats and whether they will be pre-installed. Traveling without proper child restraints is illegal and could result in penalties.
Traffic Considerations
While Takamatsu may not be as congested as larger cities, it's still wise to avoid rush hours, typically from 7 am to 9 am and 5 pm to 7 pm. Plan your routes to avoid getting stuck in traffic, and be cautious when navigating around complex intersections or unfamiliar areas.
Cost-Effective Travel
Opting for a car rental can be more economical than relying on taxis, especially when traveling to destinations outside the city. Rental vehicles usually come with GPS navigation to assist with directions, allowing you to visit attractions like the nearby town of Kotohira and its famous shrine, Kompirasan, without the stress of public transportation.
Rental Locations
Takamatsu has several car rental agencies, including at the Takamatsu Airport and around the main train station. You can choose from a variety of providers, ensuring you find a vehicle that suits your preferences and budget.
Driving in Japan
Remember that in Japan, you'll be driving on the left side of the road. Road signs are typically in both Japanese and English, especially on major roads, but it's beneficial to have a vehicle with an English-language navigation system. Be mindful of cyclists, particularly in urban areas, and always adhere to traffic laws, including stopping at red lights and railway crossings. Never drink and drive, as Japan has strict laws against driving under the influence.

Fantastic Yaris Toyota 14 day
From getting off the plane to taking the shuttle to the service center to pick up the car, everything was very fast and convenient, and the service attitude was great. Once our clothes were packed, the inside of the car was very clean and nice to drive. It was just the right size for the two of us, and it was easy to park. Returning the car on the way back was also very fast—even closer than the airport and very convenient. They returned us to the airport with a shuttle after we dropped off the car.
