The extra rice is already on standby.

Indeed, one of the best ways to get acquainted with a person or a place is to sample their signature dishes. And when it comes to Filipino cuisine, you can’t get better than Chef JP Anglo. He strives to serve up Filipino cuisine that’s simple yet tantalizing and gives you a taste of home.
After the success of his restaurant, Sarsa,in the Philippines, he brought his culinary genius along with him when he opened Kooyarestaurant in Dubai. Kooya Dubai is all about bold flavors and versatility and is set in a gorgeous location that’s designed by Gabby Lichuaco. Here are more reasons to celebrate Chef Anglo’s latest venture.

    The playful restaurant name

You’ve got to admit that Kooya Dubai’s name is captivating, but it really isn’t that deep. Those who don’t speak the language might not instantly get the reference, but it’s actually a playful way of saying “kuya” or “big brother.” We think it’s a cool way of reassuring their guests that they’ve got you and that you’ll be receiving the hospitality that Pinoy’s are known for.

More Filipino restaurant options in Dubai

There’s no shortage of Filipino restaurants in Dubai, but who wouldn’t be glad to have more options? Filipino food deserves the same recognition as other cuisines, such as Thai, Chinese, or Japanese and the opening of Kooya restaurant in Dubai is a great way to expose more people to it. This only proves that Filipino cuisine is not at all boring.

    Modern but familiar Filipino cuisine

Kooya Dubai’s menu offers a modern take on traditional Filipino dishes. Don’t get it twisted – modernizing the classic fare doesn’t mean they’ve lost authenticity or the flavors they’re known for. Instead, it’s elevated and made restaurant-quality. Take the Pineapple Dilis or Calamansi Summer Salad on the menu, for example.

Comforting meals that feel like home

Being miles away from your family, it’s hard not to get homesick. One way to help you combat this feeling is by eating something comforting that reminds you of home. It’s why Chef Anglo set up Kooya Dubai – so you can once again indulge in favorites like Kare-kare, Pancit Bihon, or the acclaimed Tortang Talong.

    An inclusive menu

Introducing Filipino food to other cultures doesn’t come without challenges. Because pork is considered “haram” or forbidden in Islam, some recipes had to be adapted. Kooya Dubai was up to the task and offers chicken and seafood fares, as well as vegetarian options. We’ve heard the Chicken Inasal and Beef Belly Caldereta are a hit!

    Warm and welcoming interiors

The place has a very homey feel which makes it perfect for family gatherings and group hangouts. It has this tropical and eccentric vibe that was achieved through the help of interior designer Gabby Lichauco. Chef Anglo likens walking into Kooya restaurant in Dubai to visiting your relative’s home that’s nicely decorated with plants and local artwork.

A place for creating new core memories

Food has an uncanny capacity to elicit memories and feelings. Recall the birthday parties and fiestas you had back home and how everything was cooked to perfection; how you would gather around with loved ones and munch on Lumpiang Shanghai or cool down with a glass of Mais Con Hielo and listen to their fascinating stories. Now, you can create new memories at Kooya Dubai.

    They do takeout too!

It’s admirable how all the OFWs are out there grinding at work to have something to send back home. And because they deserve to treat themselves too, it’s great news that Kooya Dubai also does takeout and delivery. Just shoot them a message and order ahead of time to have Chef Anglo’s specialties delivered anywhere in Dubai.
