Thank you so much for a great experience. Our tour guide Joy was so tentative and awesome. She greeted us at the metro station and then we headed to the biggest first market in Seoul to look at all kinds of sea creatures. The market was separated into 4 sessions, the live sashimi, the frozen, the fermented, and shell fish. We got there at 4 and by the time we finished at 6 on a Sunday evening, this place was still full of people. After we finished the tour, we were brought to a local restaurant on the 2/F to taste the sashimi, live octopus, spicy seafood hotpot and some Korean side dishes. The dinner was delicious and definitely once in a life time experience to put moving octopus in the mouth. Highly recommended.
The guide was very nice. It was cool to have a traditional meal experience. The market is huge and clean (barely a smell). The size of most the seafood is also massive, especially the crabs. I'm not a huge seafood lover, but the Korean sashimi and fish stew were tasty enough. I suspect it would be more impressive to those who love seafood. There didn't seem much to know or learn about the market, that is probably what I would like to know in hindsight... more about where the fish are from and how the fishermen get them.
We met with Sophie our guide who was incredibly knowledgable and happy to answer all our questions about sea food, Korean culture as well as history! She led the tour at our pace and made recommendations throughout, taking into account what we liked and didn't like. The food included is a proper dinner (huge serving of sashimi with side dishes and fish soup with rice for after). Sophie's English is perfect and she was so helpful in taking us back to the metro station and giving us directions for our onward journey. I couldn't recommend this tour enough and would advise anyone in Seoul to see the fish market with a Korean guide as it would be near impossible to do as a foreigner by yourself.
I was very lucky to meet tour guide Joy this time. I had no difficulty communicating in English. I also felt that he really liked introducing Korean culture/history/geography, so he took up this freelance job (to be honest, he was mostly satisfied). I thought it was just a set menu, but I knew he would introduce the fish market and local seafood, and take me on a tour of each type of seafood stall. I ordered extra crab food. When I went to the stall, he would be very attentive and remind me because the menu was so rich, and he would help my fellow stall owner pick out all the dishes. When my family members were having dinner, I asked him questions about Korea, and he answered them patiently. Highly recommended if you want to live in the same house as Li, eat seafood and have a local introduce the history of the fish market. Thank you for your arrangement!
I took my trip back in early April (solo) and had Joy as my guide. I cannot express how amazing she was. She was so knowledgeable about everything, but most importantly she was so incredibly kind. We had a great dinner and a wonderful conversation. It was an amazing experience and I can't recommend it enough!
