Nikko Toshogu Shrine and Kegon Falls Day Trip from Tokyo
- Explore the sacred site of Tokugawa Ieyasu - the World Heritage "Toshogu Shrine," and marvel at the beauty of Edo-era carvings.
- Ride the legendary "Irohazaka 48 Curves" and conquer Japan's most beautiful winding road.
- Gaze upon the thundering "Kegon Falls" and experience the awe of one of Japan's three great waterfalls.
What to expect
First Stop: Toshogu Shrine A pinnacle of Edo art, it is one of Japan’s most representative historical and cultural heritage sites. From the “Three Wise Monkeys” symbolizing wisdom (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil), to the “Sleeping Cat” foretelling peace, and the Chinese sages and mythical auspicious beasts, it is an encyclopedia of Japanese craftsmanship. The vermilion halls and towering ancient cedars create a solemn atmosphere, and the sight of autumn maples dyed in gold leaf is breathtaking.
Second Stop: Irohazaka Winding Road (View from the car, no disembarking) Japan’s legendary winding road. Named for its 48 hairpin bends corresponding to the 48 Japanese kana characters. In autumn, the entire road transforms into a three-dimensional gallery of crimson and gold, rated as one of the “most beautiful autumn roads in the world.”
Third Stop: Lake Chuzenji Japan’s highest volcanic lake. Azaleas in spring, lush green trees in summer, red leaves in autumn, and snowscapes in winter – it offers beautiful scenery in all four seasons. Legend has it that ancient shrines are submerged at the bottom of the lake, and when mist fills the air, it resembles the fantasy world of “Princess Mononoke.”
Fourth Stop: Kegon Falls One of Japan’s three great waterfalls. The waters of Lake Chuzenji thunder down a hundred-meter cliff, and the splashing mist refracts an eternal rainbow in the sunlight. In winter, there is another spectacular sight: cold currents freeze the waterfall into giant ice pillars, which glow with a mysterious blue light under night illumination, forming a surreal scene with the lakeside cedars. The writer Tokutomi Roka once marveled at this scene as the “concretization of heaven and earth’s wrath.”

Reviews
Our tour guide Zachary was the best hence, we had the best time and tour at Nikko. Everything was great, places, food, and memories. Our driver was good too.
The tour was led by Ko. Super nice guy. Told a lot of interesting things about the history. I would definitely recommend it to everyone!
We went during Japan's 3-day weekend, so it was very crowded. We went to see the waterfall first. It's special because you have to take an elevator to see it.
The Nikko trip was wonderful! The journey was smooth and safe. The driver was very professional, and our guide Jeffrey was knowledgeable and managed the schedule perfectly. Everything was well organized and on time. Highly recommended!
our tour guide was Michael. he speaks clear English and very nice. the tour itself was easy and saves u time and energy. i would do this next time but probably choose a better season like autumn - foliage or when the cherry blossom is in full bloom
I hope there could be more time to visit each attraction. This group tour was well-paced and packed with activities, and the guide's explanations were detailed and engaging, making it a very rewarding experience. Although the schedule was a bit rushed, the overall atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant, making it a wonderful and memorable experience.
yong is good and well explained. its just its tour so need to be quick and have a lot of place to go.
The value for money was excellent. Everything happened as advertised. Our tour guide was very attentive and helpful. April wasn't the best time of year, as it was after the spring bloom and before everything turned green.
We had the best time on our trip to Nikko. Our guide, Hang was great. He provided a lot of information on not just about Nikko, but Japan history. I would definitely go back to Nikko. There is so much to explore.
The booking process is quite simple and straightforward, and the tour guide was very professional in answering questions and providing everyone with a great experience. I highly recommend using Klook for booking tickets.
