Kinkaku-ji's official name is Rokuon-ji, but it is nicknamed "Kinkaku-ji" because the exterior walls of the Shariden (Relic Hall), the temple's central building, are entirely covered in gold leaf. The temple was originally built in 1397 as the mountain villa of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (the model for Lord Yoshimitsu in the anime "Ikkyu-san"), and later converted into a Zen temple, "Bodai-sho."
