The name comes from two stories of when lives were saved here. The first time was during the Ryukyu period. Legend has it that the prince of Nakijin Castle, a World Heritage site, escaped to this cave after a battle, survived, and later built Iha Castle. The second time, about 300 residents were evacuated here during the Battle of Okinawa, but not a single person lost his or her life. During that evacuation, a male and female child was born, and the site is known as a place of good fortune.

The highlight of Cave Okinawa is the symbolic and extremely rare "red and white" stalactite.
