The owner and staff were amazing…so sad we were there only for one night for a music show. Gracious and amazing

FantasticStayed with friends
Wonderful place to stay in Nara, a beautiful traditional Japanese house, quiet, nice neighborhood, about 10-15 minutes walk to shopping and restaurant area, but we don’t mind the walk through the peaceful and beautiful alleys.

Below average Review of Guesthouse Naramachi
The introduction and tour by the proprietor as well as the officious explanation of the myriad of strict rules might leave you feeling you have just landed on a prison farm. He may ask for your passport four times if you do not hand it over within ten seconds. The piano music, which plays until 11PM, (doors locked at 10) might be flattered to be described as sappy and is on a perpetual repeat cycle. If you want an early night it isn’t possible. A good pair of ear plugs is strongly recommended - the sound barriers between the rooms are less than paper thin.
All paths from bathroom to bedroom pass through the only living area which is charming. There are only two bathrooms and two showers, insufficient for the number of guests. The stairs to the sleeping rooms are steeper and longer than most temples so bring climbing slippers bigger than size 8 men’s – the proprietor will insist you wear them. If you are anywhere close to six feet tall you may want a hard hat – there are low ceilings in some areas.
After you have stripped your bed (rule 62) in the morning, the wife (or helper) of the proprietor will ask you to account for your bedding and towels as though you might slip them into your luggage. Towels will cost you extra.
Otherwise a great place to stay.

Great My wife and I stayed here for one night and wish we could have stayed longer! The couple that owns this place are extremely nice and helpful. The Naramachi area is great for walking around and checking our the shops. And the building itself is beautiful with a ton of history. We booked a private room and it was well worth it.

Great Although this guesthouse has more dorm-style accommodation we stayed in a private traditional room, with two Japanese futons and lots of space ('deluxe room'), which I would highly recommend. There are only two showers downstairs with limited times to use them (early morning to 10am & 5pm-10:30pm) and food must be kept and eaten downstairs. This meant that the guests and hosts socialised quite a bit in the evening, either drinking tea whilst waiting for the shower to free up or eating snacks together.

FantasticStayed with partner
Enjoyed our one night stay. It was fun staying in a ryokan. The place is well taken care of and the couple that runs the place takes great care and pride in their guesthouse.
