Guide

  • The Guanxi Weiwu Scenic Area is located in Guanxi Town, Longnan City, Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province. It is a national 4A-level tourist attraction and a key national cultural heritage site. It boasts the best-preserved and most functionally complete Hakka enclosed village (weiwu) discovered to date, both domestically and internationally – Guanxi Xinwei. This magnificent building was first constructed during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, funded by local gentry Xu Mingjun with millions of taels and taking over a decade to complete. It is hailed as "the ancient Roman castle of the East" and a "scattered imperial palace among the people," making it an excellent destination for exploring Hakka architectural art and historical culture.
  • Stepping into Guanxi Xinwei, visitors are struck by its rigorous symmetrical layout and formidable defense system. The entire weiwu is square-shaped, with outer walls built from rammed earth (sanhetu), making them incredibly sturdy. Inside, it encompasses ancestral halls, deliberation halls, study rooms, and hundreds of residential units, forming a self-sufficient, enclosed family society. Here, you can wander through the labyrinthine ancient alleys, meticulously admire the exquisite wood carvings, stone carvings, and gray sculptures, and immerse yourself in the profound heritage and clan cohesion of the Hakka ancestors who thrived on this land.
  • Today, the Guanxi Weiwu Scenic Area is not only a pilgrimage site for architecture and history enthusiasts but also a cultural showcase for deeply experiencing Hakka folk customs. In addition to visiting the ancient architectural complex, visitors can also savor authentic Hakka stuffed tofu, tangpi (a type of noodle), and other specialty delicacies, or enjoy traditional Hakka folk songs and cultural performances. Whether exploring the mysteries of ancient architecture, tracing the roots of Hakka culture, or enjoying a slow-paced rural life away from the urban hustle, Guanxi Weiwu promises an unforgettable journey through history and culture.
