Additional information
- The Self Guided Tour (General Admission) begins at the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland Visitor Centre
- It takes approximately 90 minutes for the full park walk
- The Lady Knox Geyser show starts at 10:15am
- There is ample parking at the site of the Lady Knox Geyser and most people are parked within a walk of about 100m to the geyser arena
- The Visitor Centre also supplies parking areas for visitors which is well sign posted. At peak times, staff will guide you to the parking areas
- Special needs parking is located at the front of the Visitor Centre
- There are no toilet facilities in the main park. Please ensure you use the toilet facilities available at the Visitor Centre before entering the park
- Smoking is strictly not allowed within the attraction. A designated smoking area is sign posted at the front entrance of the Visitor Centre
- Thermal pools can be very hot (over 100⁰C or 210⁰F) and have toxic gases or fumes at the surface. Also, thermal pools can form a thin crust over the top of them that looks like a solid surface, but will break if a person stood on it. Thermal pools can be hidden under vegetation
- For your own safety, please ensure you and your children stick to the walkways, stay behind the barriers, and obey the safety signs. It is recommended holding hands with young children when walking through the park

How to get there
- By car: From Rotorua, travel south along the Thermal Explorer Highway (SH 5) towards Taupo for 27km (20mins drive) until you reach the Waiotapu Tavern. Turn left opposite the tavern and travel 2km to reach Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
- By car from Taupo, travel north along the Thermal Explorer Highway (SH 5) towards Rotorua for 53km (40 minutes drive). Turn right where signposted and travel a further 1km to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
- For Shuttle and Intercity: Return Transport (to Rotorua): Geyser Link Shuttle number: 0800 000 4321, Thermal Land Shuttle number: 0800 894 287, and Intercity Bus number: 07 348 0366
- Allow extra traveling time during the summer months

The Lady Knox Geyser, which is manually triggered at 10:15 a.m. every day, precisely controls the time and intensity of the geyser's eruption. It is indeed a spectacle. As for the positive and negative evaluations, I will not discuss it for now. Wai-OTapu Geothermal Wonderland Park has three walking trails in the park, except for Mrs. Knox Fountain, which is located in another area. You can choose to walk one, two, or three, each taking 45, 60, or 90 minutes. We walked the entire area. I stopped to take pictures again, and spent about 3 hours in the park. The three trails are dotted with geothermal pools of various compositions, each with its own special color or appearance due to its different mineral composition. Overall, I think this geothermal world is like a comprehensive version of Taipei’s Beitou Geothermal Valley + Yangmingshan Xiaoyoukeng + Yellowstone Park elements. It is a special geothermal landscape park worth visiting.

Wai-O-Tapu Wonderland is a truly unique experience—something you don’t see or smell every day! The vibrant geothermal landscapes, bubbling mud pools, and steaming vents make it feel like another world. It’s a must-do to witness just how incredible nature can be.
One highlight not to miss is the Lady Knox Geyser, which erupts daily and puts on an impressive display. The colors and formations throughout the park are stunning, and the walking tracks offer great vantage points to take it all in. Be prepared for the strong sulfur smell, but it’s all part of the experience. Definitely worth a visit!

it was a great experience for my first time there. the sight, smell and sound was an eye opener of what actually a thermal wonderland is. it has a strong history and wonderful host we had that morning to welcome the show. parking on site was free , do head early as it starts around 1030am.

If you want to see how geothermal activity impacts the landscape, and the art that the different chemistry of the lakes create, this is where you go! Be prepared for the stink, this is primarily sulphur pits after all, but I recommend you see it!

Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland is a must-see natural attraction. Arrive early to catch the Lady Knox Geyser — it’s triggered with natural soap each day at 10:15 AM and is a really fun way to start the visit. After that, explore the three walking trails to see bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and colourful mineral terraces.
The absolute highlight was the Champagne Pool — its vibrant orange and turquoise colours are breathtaking and make for stunning photos. The paths are well-marked, and the whole place feels otherworldly and fascinating.
A fantastic experience for nature lovers and anyone interested in New Zealand’s geothermal wonders.

Arriving early in the morning, before anyone else, allows you to fully enjoy the spacious and comfortable area. The rare geothermal landscape is truly eye-opening, making this an excellent spot for both relaxation and learning!

My wife and I had a great experience with this tour. The thermal pools and lady knox geiser were amazing as you can see in the photos. I highly recommend this trip in New Zealand.

No Other place like it. Jaw dropping scenery. The geyser probably isn't worth going out of the way for, as the crowd and the wait wasn't worth it.
