Kyoto Station, located in Shimogyo-ku, is the starting point for this journey. The Tokaido Shinkansen platform sits on the upper floors of the station, with clear signage directing you from the main concourse. Kyoto Station also serves as a hub for the Kintetsu line, multiple bus routes, and the Karasuma subway line — making it easy to reach from anywhere in the city. Bus services to Takayama also depart from JR Kyoto Station.
Takayama Station is the terminus for the Limited Express Hida. The historic old town, morning markets, and main tourist sights are all within a short walk or bus ride from the station. The station has coin lockers for storing luggage while you explore.
The first leg departs Kyoto Station on the Tokaido Shinkansen. Both Hikari and Kodama services stop at Nagoya and take approximately 35 to 40 minutes. This is a short but high-speed leg — the main purpose is simply to get you to Nagoya Station efficiently for the Hida connection.
The second and more memorable leg is the Limited Express Hida, one of the limited express trains serving this route from Nagoya to Takayama, and there is typically one direct train per day. Travel time is approximately 2 hours 25 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes. The train follows the Hida River upstream through a series of steep forested gorges, with panoramic windows that offer some of the most spectacular scenery on any limited express route in Japan. Seat reservations are strongly recommended due to high demand during peak seasons, especially between October and November when the colors along the Hida gorge are at their peak. For ticket details, the Limited Express train fare is ¥11,260.
Board the Tokaido Shinkansen at Kyoto Station toward Nagoya. Both Hikari and Kodama services stop at Nagoya and are covered by the JR Pass. Travel time is approximately 35 to 40 minutes.
Arrive at Nagoya Station and transfer to the Limited Express Hida bound for Takayama. The Hida platforms are on a different floor from the Shinkansen — allow at least 15 to 20 minutes for the transfer. Follow signs for JR Central limited express services.
Board the Limited Express Hida at Nagoya. Travel time to Takayama Station is approximately 2 hours 25 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes. The train passes through the dramatic Hida River gorge — window seats on the right side (facing the direction of travel) offer the best gorge views.
A direct highway bus connects Kyoto and Takayama, typically taking around 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours at a cost of approximately ¥4,000 to 35. It is a viable budget option, particularly if you are not holding a JR Pass, but the significantly shorter journey time and superior comfort of the train make the rail route the preferred choice for most travelers.
If you are traveling during peak season — cherry blossom in spring, autumn foliage in October and November, or Golden Week — book whichever option you choose well in advance, as both trains and buses fill up quickly on the Kyoto–Takayama corridor.
The entire route is covered by the JR Pass — the Shinkansen Hikari or Kodama from Kyoto to Nagoya, and the Limited Express Hida from Nagoya to Takayama. A round trip on this route alone represents significant value relative to the cost of the pass. Remember that Nozomi is not covered; always board Hikari or Kodama at Kyoto.
This pass covers the Hida limited express from Nagoya but does not include the Tokaido Shinkansen from Kyoto. If Kyoto is your base, the nationwide JR Pass is the more useful option. The Takayama-Hokuriku pass is better suited to travelers based in Osaka combining Takayama with Kanazawa.
Book the Shinkansen and Hida legs separately on Klook. Advance booking for the Hida is particularly important during peak foliage season when seats sell out days ahead.
