Fantastic 5.0
Our driver and guide, Joseph, was very professional and responsible, and even took us to explore some extra views. We were so lucky to have clear weather today and saw sperm whales, dolphins, and seals!

Great 4.0
The whale watching activity was canceled due to bad weather, but the tour guide seemed inexperienced and unable to arrange and execute a backup plan in a timely manner. When we stopped along the way, they also didn't announce the meeting time. Luckily, the group members were quite good and didn't cause any delays. The guide did provide some brief commentary along the way, and there was someone in our group who didn't understand Chinese, but the guide hardly used English to accommodate them.

Fantastic 5.0
Our tour guide was incredibly enthusiastic, taking us to Tongue Point, a spot very close to the sea lions. The itinerary was well-planned, and even though the road conditions weren't the smoothest, we felt completely at ease with our guide. You definitely shouldn't miss this!

Fantastic 5.0
It was a choppy ride with gale warning and high chance of sea sickness. Thankful that the ride proceeded and we got to see marama and tiaki whales and a school of dusky dolphins and fur seals

What to know before visiting Kaikoura

Top experiences at a glance

Kaikoura draws most attention for its outdoor and sports activities, followed by organised tours — both peak through the year but busiest in November. Demand dips around September, so the rhythm of the year swings from a slow early autumn to a clear peak in November.

Best activities by traveller type

Families will find tours a convenient fit, with options across a wide price range that make it easy to match comfort and budget. Couples often favour outdoor and sports activities for memorable, nature-focused experiences. Solo travellers and small groups can choose either category depending on whether they want guided sightseeing or more active, outdoorsy pursuits.

What travellers from Malaysia should book ahead

Most bookings for Kaikoura are typically made about a month out, so you can keep some flexibility and still pick up activities a day or two before travel; the earliest planners tend to book around two months ahead. Booking ahead matters most in November, when demand is at its highest.

How the main categories compare for price and fit

Tours are the easiest way in, offering the cheapest median price and the widest spread of options from budget to premium, which suits travellers who want choice and predictability. Outdoor and sports activities sit at the higher end of the typical price range and appeal to those after active, nature-led experiences. Together the two categories cover both entry-level and more premium experiences, so there’s something for almost every traveller profile.
