Phang Nga

Mueang Phang Nga is the capital district of Phang Nga Province, a scenic and often overlooked destination nestled between the tourist hubs of Phuket and Krabi in southern Thailand. While most travelers rush through Phang Nga en route to the beaches, those who pause discover a town of genuine charm, set beneath limestone karst mountains and home to an extraordinary bay that has captivated visitors since the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. Phang Nga Bay, or Ao Phang Nga National Park, is the province's defining masterpiece, a UNESCO-listed seascape of more than 40 island formations rising dramatically from emerald-green water, interconnected by sea caves, lagoons, and tidal passages best explored by kayak or longtail boat. The famous James Bond Island (Ko Tapu) and the stilt-house Muslim fishing village of Ko Panyi are the bay's most iconic sights, but the area rewards deeper exploration with hidden lagoons and mangrove channels discovered only by canoe. On land, Mueang Phang Nga town itself offers accessible local temples including Wat Suwan Kuha (a cave temple with a reclining golden Buddha guarded by chattering monkeys), Sa Nang Manora Forest Park, and the atmospheric Phung Chang Cave. The absence of mass beach tourism in the town itself means Phang Nga moves at an authentic Thai pace, offering a more serene and affordable base than Phuket.
