Fantastic 5.0
Our driver and guide, Joseph, was very professional and responsible, and even took us to explore some extra views. We were so lucky to have clear weather today and saw sperm whales, dolphins, and seals!

Great 4.0
The whale watching activity was canceled due to bad weather, but the tour guide seemed inexperienced and unable to arrange and execute a backup plan in a timely manner. When we stopped along the way, they also didn't announce the meeting time. Luckily, the group members were quite good and didn't cause any delays. The guide did provide some brief commentary along the way, and there was someone in our group who didn't understand Chinese, but the guide hardly used English to accommodate them.

Fantastic 5.0
Our tour guide was incredibly enthusiastic, taking us to Tongue Point, a spot very close to the sea lions. The itinerary was well-planned, and even though the road conditions weren't the smoothest, we felt completely at ease with our guide. You definitely shouldn't miss this!

More about Kaikoura Tours

What to expect

Tours in Kaikoura usually focus on coastal scenery, wildlife encounters and small-group exploration. They suit travellers who enjoy being outdoors, spotting marine life and learning from local guides; some options are relaxed and suitable for most people while others involve more active time on the water.

How to choose

Pricing for tours in Kaikoura sits in a moderate band, with a noticeable spread between entry-level and premium options. Lower-end choices tend to be straightforward group departures with basic inclusions, while higher-end offerings add smaller groups, extra commentary or more immersive wildlife time—so there’s real choice at both ends depending on how much you want to prioritise comfort and exclusivity.

When to go

Demand peaks in the busiest months and drops to its quietest in the trough months, which affects both availability and atmosphere: the busiest months mean more sold-out departures and livelier viewing vessels, while the quietest month offers fewer crowds and a calmer experience. If avoiding crowds matters most, plan for the quietest month when availability is highest and the atmosphere is more relaxed.
