Room was spotless. Staff went above and beyond. Breakfast and dinner was delicious. The onsen was beautiful.

Cool, old school Japan experience. Dated for sure but has charm. Nice folks running it. Breakfast was small, probably the only real complaint. Also no instant coffee available to make on your own so for those that like to get up and have a cup it’s not happening until breakfast and if you order Japanese breakfast you pay extra for coffee. Cold in the hotel, and the kerosene heaters don’t turn on super early so you’re in your room till 7. Nice onsen.

Very clean. Older but charming. Exactly what I wanted. Delicious restaurant on site to use if you get snowed in or just want a fantastic meal. Onsen was also great.

Very old ryokan, even the wallpaper fell off here and there, but feels quite original and ancient, the onsen too, I wouldn’t rate it as a super good stay, but for the price, I would say it is quite worth it

Come here for the best experience. So cozy. Small mountain town. It’s not the four seasons, it’s much better. Family owned. Lowkey. Come and enjoy yourself.

Absolutely amazing stay! The onsen is incredible. The room with a mountain view was fabulous. So quiet! Incredible dining options a few blocks away. Just wow. The 4th generation owners are the kindest hosts. The free shuttles to ski and to the train station are so convenient. You are lucky to stay here.

Onsen is the highlight, we booked for the western room but somehow we got the ryokan type which is a bit smaller and the private bathroom is tiny. My recommendation for breakfast is Japanese as the Western one, you will get just a fried egg, a ham and two breads. (Free coffee for Western, 400 yen for Japanese) So far, the hotel is nice, the owner family is so kind, helpful, and lovely, we had a good time there 😊

I knew I wanted to snowboard at Lotte Arai Resort but I read that it was in a very small town and basically only the resort buildings so i picked this spot because they offered a free shuttle to the nearby mountains. (Not Lotte though its a 40 minute drive and I had to get a separate bus. It was very easy though and the owner was able to help me figure it all out. If you do that route bring cash, it costs 2,000 jpy one way). When I arrived from Tokyo it was a complete 360 in scenery. It was snowing, quiet, calm, almost deserted like feeling but so quaint. The property was really so amazing and felt like a traditional home/experience from the interior, the traditional breakfast they served, the tatami rooms with the floor beds and hot water for tea 24/7. And of course the onsen on site. They also provide robes and directions how to use the onsen. I have tattoo's and wasn't sure I would be able to have the experience and I'm so glad I stayed at the Kofuan because I was able to go 24/7 super early in the morning or late evening to avoid people out of respect. The area around Myoko Kogen is very remote though, not many restaurants, and the 7/11 in town is a short mile away. I would definitely come back here. I didn't mind not being near a lot of food because you can buy breakfast and dinner at the property plus there was a cute local grocery store across the street I was able to try new snacks and yummy fruits at.

We booked this for the traditional Japanese Lodge/Onsen experience and it did deliver. It is very basic living and only for those who want to experience the traditional stay and hospitality. I rated it good as it delivered what we expected. There are no creature comforts and you sleep on a traditional futon which was surprisingly comfortable. The staff are very accommodating, helpful and polite. The location is in a village so there are no places to go out.
