Fantastic 5.0
This was a great tour. Our tour guide Rob was able to assess our group and let us hike all over the glacier because we had a longer tour (3.5 hr). He was knowledgeable about the glacier. It was incredibly beautiful.

Fantastic 5.0
A striking visual impact: Glaciers are not purely white, but rather interwoven with serene and profound glacial blue and the black textures branded by volcanic ash, making them desolate and magnificent. Down-to-earth yet magical physical sensations: The crunching sound of crampons gripping the ice surface is exceptionally clear. Holding an ice axe and walking among ice crevices and ridges, every step is filled with a genuine sense of adventure. Awe and regret for nature: Witnessing firsthand the noticeable recession of the glacier's edge due to climate warming, beyond the shock, one feels all the more deeply the greatness and fragility of nature.

Fantastic 5.0
The tour guide was extremely professional, placed great emphasis on everyone's safety, and shared information and history about the glacier. I was initially worried that I wouldn't have the stamina for the 6-hour tour, but actually, after every stretch of walking, the guide would stop to share various information, which gave everyone a chance to catch their breath. The scenery is truly beautiful and well worth a visit.

Fantastic 5.0
Although the weather wasn't very good that day, the equipment provided on-site was extremely complete, and the guide was professional and reassuring! During the break, there was also free hot coffee and hot chocolate to enjoy. The overall experience was wonderful, and I highly recommend everyone to join!

Great 4.0
It must have been the summer season, as the icebergs weren't as spectacular as I'd imagined, which was a little disappointing. However, the staff were all wonderful, and the coffee and chocolate were free to enjoy. We were in a hurry and hadn't had lunch, so I ate two chocolate bars, which I greatly appreciated.

What to know about Falljökull Glacier

Falljökull, Icelandic for Falling Glacier, tucked into the Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park in Southeast Iceland, has earned its fame as one of the most photogenic and accessible outlet glaciers on the country's South Coast. Unlike its more famous neighbor Skaftafellsjökull, which is retreating and increasingly visited only from viewpoints, Falljökull remains one of the more reliable and visually striking glaciers for guided walking tours in the region. It sits within Öræfi, the district at the foot of Öræfajökull volcano, Iceland's highest peak (2,110 m), whose last eruption was in 1728. That volcanic backdrop, combined with the constant creak and shift of moving glacial ice, makes Falljökull feel less like a static sight and more like a living landscape. Whether it's the thrill of standing inside a living glacier, the reward of sweeping views over Iceland's southeast coastline, or the chance to capture some of the country's most striking natural formations on camera, Falljökull delivers an experience that consistently ranks among the top glacier adventures in Iceland.

Photography Spots

  • The icefall itself, visible from Route 1 as you approach Skaftafell: a good spot for a quick photo stop before or after your tour.
  • Kristínartindar ridge trail in Skaftafell, which offers elevated views over Falljökull and, on clear days, a glimpse of Morsárfoss, Iceland's tallest waterfall (228 m / 748 ft).
  • On the ice itself, where guides often pause at the highest safely accessible point of the route so hikers can photograph the crevasse fields and the surrounding Öræfi coastline.

Tips for Visiting Falljökull Glacier

What should you pack for a Falljökull Glacier tour?

  • Waterproof, windproof outer layers (jacket and pants): glacier weather changes fast, even in summer.
  • Warm mid-layers (fleece or wool): temperatures on the ice are noticeably colder than at the visitor centre.
  • Sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots: most operators require boots compatible with crampons; some rent boots if needed.
  • Wool or synthetic gloves and a hat: even summer glacier walks can be windy and near-freezing.
  • Sunglasses: glare off the ice is intense on clear days.
  • A daypack with water and snacks; most tours run 2.5 to 5 hours including transfer and hiking time. Crampons, helmets, harnesses, and ice axes are supplied by the tour operator and included in the price. You don't need to buy or bring your own.

Which Falljökull tour is right for you?

  • Families with kids: Choose the shortest, beginner-level glacier walks (around 1.5 to 2 hours on the ice). Most operators set a minimum age (commonly 8 to 12 years) rather than a fitness requirement, but children should be comfortable walking on uneven, sometimes slippery terrain.
  • First-timers/ casual hikers: A standard 3 to 4 hour glacier discovery hike is manageable for anyone in reasonable walking condition. Expect some steep, uneven sections where you'll dig crampon points into the ice, tiring on the legs but not technical.
  • Experienced hikers: Look for half-day or full-day multi-glacier hikes, crevasse exploration routes, or ice climbing add-ons for a more physically demanding, technical experience.

What are the best attractions near Falljökull Glacier?

Falljökull sits inside Vatnajökull National Park, right beside some of the South Coast's biggest highlights, making it easy to combine into a single day.

  • Skaftafell Nature Reserve: the trailhead hub for the area, with a visitor centre, campground, and marked hiking trails (no guide needed for these). Worth a half-day on its own.
  • Svartifoss Waterfall: a roughly 1.5 km (0.9 mi) hike each way from the visitor centre to a waterfall framed by dark, hexagonal basalt columns, one of Iceland's most photographed natural features.
  • Skaftafellsjökull: a neighboring outlet glacier visible from an easy, flat viewpoint trail near the visitor centre, good for a quick look if you're not doing a hike.
  • Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon: about 60 km (37 mi), roughly 45 minutes east of Skaftafell along Route 1, where icebergs calve from Breiðamerkurjökull and drift out to sea.
  • Diamond Beach: directly across the road from Jökulsárlón, where chunks of ice wash up on black volcanic sand.
  • Kirkjubæjarklaustur: a village about an hour west, useful as an overnight base if you're splitting the South Coast drive over two days.
