Old Kyoto Nighttime All-Inclusive Local Food Tour
- Explore Yasaka Shrine and the Gion entertainment quarter at night - and you may even see a Geisha!
- Savor at least ten different tastes across two restaurants (happy to accommodate your dietary restrictions!), and have a sake, beer, or otherwise at each stop too.
- Get personalized attention with group sizes that never exceed six guests.
- Rest assured that your guide will speak native or honestly near native English. No aspiring English speakers running our tours!
- With no tipping, and food and drink included, you need not worry about being taken for a ride.
While we always try our best to adhere to the plan as set out above, please understand that tour routes, restaurant stops (as applicable), and timings may vary based on circumstances beyond our control.
What to expect
Ready for a six guest or less exploration of the local food and entertainment districts of Kyoto? We spend half our time checking out the sights, and half our time eating on this engaging, all-inclusive night tour! You'll mingle with locals, eat regional specialties at two different standing bar restaurants (though we often sit down at one or both), and be given a visual feast of a primer on the nightlife of Gion (content is teen+ appropriate), including geisha and more!
With a native English speaking guide at your side, you'll get a clear understanding of what the area is all about. And with some great food and a couple of (included) drinks in you!
Please note this is a sample menu; seasonal changes and restaurant availability may affect the exact dishes served on your food tour.

Loved this night tour through the streets of Kyoto! The food was delicious, and I learned so much along the way. It was especially interesting to hear about Japanese culture from an expat’s perspective—our guide, Hugo- offered unique insights that made the experience even more engaging. A fun and eye-opening way to explore the city!
We had a great time on this tour. Our guide, Joshua, was knowledgable and fun to chat with. Even though it was raining for the beginning we had a nice tour of the area before hitting up some izakaya I would never have foudn or been brave enough to enter on my own. I don't eat food or seafood but at both locations our guide found delicious substitutions for me.
Hugo was an incredible guide! Very knowledgeable of the area, could answer any question and loved to crack a joke! He showed us some interesting streets and has a story to tell about every one. The food he introduced us to was 10/10! It was a great evening all round.
My husband and I had an incredible tour with Jamie! She was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Kyoto and the world of geisha, bringing the stories and culture to life in such an engaging way. Jamie took us to some amazing local restaurants and a stunning temple. One of the highlights was wandering through the hidden side streets of Gion—places most tourists never get to see. It felt like a truly authentic experience, and Jamie’s insights made it unforgettable. Highly recommend her!
Our tour guide Bryan walked with us through Gion and we learned first some facts about Kyoto, Geisha culture and Shintoism and Buddhism while visiting Gion streets and Yasaka shrine. Then we went to 2 different restaurants, very quite and with great food! I totally recommend this tour.
Rin was a very good tour guide. He showed us the hidden side of Kyoto and all the good places where locals go. Walking pace was just right - not too fast, not too slow. Overall experience was great! highly recommend!
Brian Hamilton was our guide and he made our night out a great experience. We initially thought that we were going to be with a big group but it ended up becoming a private tour since there were only 4 of us. We loved how he incorporated the educational aspect of Old Kyoto while introducing us to areas of the more Modern Kyoto of today. The hidden restaurants we visited had amazing food and we enjoyed every bite. I would definitely recommend this tour and ask for Brian!!! You will not be disappointed!
Wonderful evening with Jamie taking a walk around Guon and sampling different dishes in w restaurants. Food was delicious and Jamie was very friendly and welcoming. Thank you again.
Maya, our guide, was fantastic! It ended up being a private tour since only our group of 2 booked for that evening. Maya was so friendly, knowledgeable, and approachable to talk to and ask questions. This was my first food tour even though I am an experienced and frequent traveler and it was a highlight from our trip. First Maya walked us through Gion and to the Yasaka Shrine. She talked about Japanese culture and history along the way which was great as a foreigner traveling to Japan for the first time. Then we made 2 stops for food and both were delicious and fun to try all the different dishes. I was pleasantly surprised by the food selection as it was mostly Japanese dishes that I had not tried yet versus popular staples like ramen, gyoza, takoyaki, yaktori, etc. The venues were also small, intimate, and more of a local vibe. I would have been intimidated to walk into these local places as an English speaking foreigner so it was a treat to have this experience. Also come hungry because you are provided with plenty of food! I would recommend this tour and Maya to anyone traveling to Kyoto!
I am so thankful to have been able to do this tour! I had an amazing time. The knowledge, history, delicious meals, and company were 10/10! when I go back to Kyoto I would like to do this again.
