What to expect
11:30 Hida Takayama (approx. 150 minutes, including free lunch time)
Stroll through the traditional old streets of Takayama and experience the rich Edo-period atmosphere. Located in the northern part of Gifu Prefecture, Hida Takayama is the central city of the Hida region. The city has perfectly preserved the castle town and merchant town streetscapes from the Edo period, earning it the nickname "Little Kyoto of Hida." Step into the most representative "Sanmachi Old Town" (Ichinomachi, Ninomachi, Sanmachi), where Edo-period machiya (traditional merchant houses) line both sides. The quaint wooden houses, coupled with the gurgling streams in front, make it feel as if you've traveled back to a Japanese street 400 years ago. This place is not only great for photos and browsing but also a food paradise. You can freely taste popular local delicacies such as Hida beef and Takayama ramen, or purchase special souvenirs that showcase the exquisite craftsmanship of Hida artisans. As you wander through, you can feel Takayama's unique historical charm and slow-paced allure everywhere.
15:00 Shirakawa-go Gassho Village (approx. 90 minutes)
Shirakawa-go is surrounded by mountains on all sides, with rice paddies crisscrossing and clear streams flowing through the village, earning it the reputation of "the land of forests and streams." Among them, the Ogimachi settlement is the largest of the three World Heritage Gassho Villages (Shirakawa-go, Gokayama Ainokura, Suganuma), with approximately 152 households, perfectly preserving the traditional gassho-zukuri architectural style. After the Daihakukawa and Shokawa rivers, originating from the sacred Mount Haku, converge, the river water takes on a snowy white color, which is where the name "Shirakawa-go" comes from. Ascend to the Shiroyama Observatory on the northeast side of Ogimachi to take in the entire Gassho Village and the distant, continuous mountain scenery of Mount Haku, a classic must-see view.
