What to expect

The “High Island Geo Trail – Po Pin Chau Section”

The “High Island Geo Trail – Po Pin Chau Section” is a round trip of about 2 km in length and involves an ascent of about 200 m. Completing the entire trail takes about 2 hours. With a difficulty rating of 3 out of 5 stars and uneven terrain, this route is only suitable for people with hiking or trekking experience. Please assess your physical fitness and hiking experience before setting out, and stay safe at all times. The entire trail is exposed, without shade, shelter, refreshment points or mid-route exits. Please check the latest weather information before setting out, and ensure that you have suitable gear and sufficient food and water. As the cliff edges near the trail have undergone long-term weathering, please follow the waymarks, stay on the maintained trail, and do not cross barriers or approach cliff edges to ensure your safety. Practice “Take Your Litter Home” to protect our precious natural environment together.

The entrance and exit for the Po Pin Chau Section are located next to the terminus of New Territories GMB Route No. 9A on Sai Kung Man Yee Road. Along the route, there are waymarks and viewing spots, with preserved landmarks such as the original triangulation station and the cross-shaped concrete structure. The route concludes at the Po Pin Chau Viewing Platform. Along the way, visitors can enjoy the scenery of Po Pin Chau, the Kim Chu Wan rocky beach, the East Dam and the High Island Reservoir. The trail offers a spectacular full view of hexagonal rock column landscape in Sai Kung.

In addition to the Po Pin Chau Section, the High Island Geo Trail includes the East Dam Section and the Biu Tsim Kok Section, for which reservations are not required.

For more information about the East Dam of the High Island Reservoir, please visit the Hong Kong Geopark website

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and its contractors, subject to on-site conditions, may adjust visitor entry times and quotas for the Po Pin Chau section at any time, and reserve the right to implement any and all requisite management measures.

Inclement Weather Arrangements:

  • If the Hong Kong Observatory(HKO)has issued a Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 or above, or a Black Rainstorm Warning Signal, all subsequent reservations for that day will be cancelled automatically
  • If HKO has issued a Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.3, reservations for that time slot will be cancelled automatically. Once Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 is cancelled, visitors will be arranged to enter the Po Pin Chau section within 3 hours after, provided that the site conditions are suitable. However, if the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.3 remains in effect at 12:00 noon, all subsequent reservations for that day will be cancelled automatically.
  • If HKO has issued (i) an Amber or Red Rainstorm Warning Signal, (ii) a Thunderstorm Warning specifying New Territories East as the affected area, or (iii) if the "Location-specific Lightning Alert" webpage reports lightning within 10 km of Sai Kung East Country Park, reservations for that time slot will be cancelled automatically. Visitors will be arranged to enter the Po Pin Chau section when the above conditions no longer apply and site conditions are suitable.

Visitors should pay attention to the latest weather forecast issued by HKO. In the event of the above-mentioned inclement weather, visitors should avoid entering the Po Pin Chau section, or leave as soon as possible to seek shelter in a safe place.

When the Hong Kong Observatory issues a Black Rainstorm Warning Signal, Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 or above, the service of New Territories GMB Route No. 9A will be suspended until further notice. If Black Rainstorm Warning Signal and Strong Wind Signal No. 3 are cancelled before 12.00 noon on that day, the GMB operator will gradually resume the service of New Territories GMB Route No. 9A, subject to the road condition. Passengers are advised to keep track of weather and traffic conditions and visit the Transport Department’s HKeMobility mobile app or website for the latest traffic news.
