Guide

The Taiyuan Northern Qi Mural Museum is a specialized archaeological site museum dedicated to tomb murals, based on the in-situ preservation and exhibition of the Xu Xianxiu Tomb. It is located in Yingze District, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, covering a total area of 20,000 square meters, including an exhibition hall of 3,830 square meters and a mural conservation and research center of 1,525 square meters. As a museum integrating history, art, and culture, it provides visitors with a window to deeply understand ancient Chinese mural art and Northern Qi culture.

As of now, there are approximately 40 Northern Dynasties mural tombs nationwide, with about 20 relatively well-preserved ones, most of which are Northern Qi mural tombs. Ancient Jinyang City, Taiyuan, Shanxi, as a "melting pot of Hu and Han cultures," has gathered a rich collection of Northern Qi mural tombs. The Taiyuan Northern Qi Mural Museum not only has exhibition halls open to the public but also a mural restoration and research center. The exhibition halls are divided into three display spaces: "Splendor of the Auxiliary Capital," "A Thousand Years at a Glance," and "Simple and Beautiful." Centered on the display of Northern Qi murals, they interpret the characteristics of the era and the important position of Jinyang in cultural exchange and ethnic integration from the Northern Dynasties to the Sui and Tang Dynasties. The mural restoration and research center continues to carry out in-situ conservation work on the Xu Xianxiu Tomb, achieving significant results, effectively addressing various diseases of the tomb, and ensuring the stability of the murals in the tomb chamber and passage, providing a reference for in-situ conservation of mural tombs at home and abroad.

The Taiyuan Northern Qi Mural Museum houses murals from the Lou Rui Tomb and Xu Xianxiu Tomb in Taiyuan, as well as murals from Jiuyuangang in Xinzhou and Shuiquanliang in Shuozhou. These numerous precious Northern Qi murals are renowned for their vibrant colors and vivid forms, showcasing the social customs, religious beliefs, and artistic achievements of the Northern Qi period. Visitors can admire these artistic treasures up close in the exhibition halls, experiencing the exquisite craftsmanship and creative wisdom of ancient artisans. In addition to static exhibitions, the Taiyuan Northern Qi Mural Museum also utilizes modern technological means, such as multimedia displays and virtual reality, to digitally recreate historical scenes of the Northern Qi period, making visitors feel as if they are in ancient society a thousand years ago. Regularly held cultural and museum lectures and special exhibitions also provide visitors with opportunities for in-depth learning and exchange.

Through its exquisite murals, the Taiyuan Northern Qi Mural Museum tells the story of the early pattern of the Chinese nation's diverse unity and the evolutionary process of the multi-faceted integration of agricultural and nomadic cultures. These murals are not only irreplaceable treasures for studying grassland history and culture but also models of exchange and mutual learning between Eastern and Western civilizations. Whether you are an art enthusiast, a historical researcher, or a tourist interested in ancient Chinese culture, you can embark on a perfect journey here to explore mural art and experience cultural charm.
