Shantou Shipaotai Park & Xiaogongyuan Full-Day Cultural Tour

Shipaotai Park
  • A Deep Dive into Historical Texture The architectural narrative of overlapping time and space is one of the core features. The journey begins at the Qing Dynasty Stone Fortress Park—a circular castle fortress built in 1874, constructed with granite and shell-lime mixture. The walls are still well-preserved. As a filming location for the movie “The Blizzard,” visitors can compare historical scenes from the film on-site and experience the military wisdom of a century-old coastal defense. Moving to the Xiaogongyuan Arcade Buildings, within the fan-shaped radial blocks, the Nansheng Department Store, completed in 1932, uses Baroque carved domes to tell the story of the prosperous overseas Chinese businessmen. The General Post Office Building, completed in 1922, features European-style arched windows and patterned tile floors, serving as a living specimen of Republican architectural aesthetics. The two are linked to form an urban historical axis of “Ming and Qing coastal defense → Republican commercial port,” allowing tourists to touch the 600-year evolution of Shantou among the bricks and tiles.
  • A Living Presentation of Intangible Cultural Heritage The immersive intangible cultural heritage experience is the biggest highlight. The national intangible cultural heritage, Yingge Dance, breaks through the traditional viewing mode, allowing tourists to closely observe the dancers painting face masks of “Water Margin” characters and observe the dynamic changes of classic formations such as “Great Peng Spreading Wings” and “Double Dragons Going Out to Sea.” The dancers strike short sticks to create exciting rhythms. In the drumbeats and shouts, the “strong and courageous” spirit of the Chaoshan people rushes forward, and this on-site impact far exceeds watching on a screen. In addition, the Chaoshan History and Culture Expo Center (or Baihuajian Scenic Area) forms a “dynamic and static complement”—when open, you can decode the details of craftsmanship through static exhibits such as Chao embroidery and嵌瓷 (kàn cí, inlaid porcelain); when closed, it presents the diverse inclusiveness of Chaoshan culture with religious and natural landscapes.
  • A Three-Dimensional Tour of Mountain, Sea, and City Views The multi-dimensional landscape experience is a unique selling point. As a “mobile viewing platform on the water,” the cross-sea ferry captures both the modern high-rise buildings on the north bank and the lush mountains of the Queshi Scenic Area on the south bank within a 15-minute voyage. On a clear day, the seamless view of the sea and sky is extremely visually striking. The Queshi Scenic Area constructs a three-dimensional tour system with the four wonders of “sea wonder, mountain beauty, stone strangeness, and cave seclusion”: on foot, you can explore the secluded interest of the Mengzhigu Cliff Stone Carvings; taking the cable car (fee at your own expense) to the top of Piaoran Pavilion allows you to have a 360° panoramic view of Shantou Port and the urban area. The colonial-era foreign building relics that occasionally flash between the hills covered by subtropical vegetation add a historical depth to the collision of Chinese and Western cultures.

What to expect

Shipaotai Park: A Living Fossil of Qing Dynasty Coastal Defense Built in 1874, this circular castle battery is constructed from granite and shell lime. It served as a filming location for the movie “The Storm.” Stroll along the battery’s passages, listen to a guide recount the defense history of the “Great Wall at Sea,” and touch the mottled walls to feel the century’s changes.

  • Xiaogongyuan Arcade Buildings: A Time Machine of Nanyang Flavors This fan-shaped radial arcade complex is rare nationwide. The Baroque dome of Nansheng Department Store and the European-style arched windows of the General Post Office recreate the prosperity of “Little Shanghai” in the 1930s. Enjoy a free lunch on Zhenbang Road Food Street, and try the recommended hand-hammered fish balls (made with freshly hammered Mi yu, in a clear and sweet broth) and sugar-onion pancakes (crispy sugar strips + peanut crumbs).
  • Cross-sea Ferry: 15 Minutes of Sea Views Take a boat across the inner bay, with panoramic views of the urban skyline on the north bank and the green hills of Queshi on the south bank. On a clear day, capture a photo of “One Bay, Two Shores” together, and feel the dynamism of the coastal city as the sea breeze blows.
  • Dual Intangible Cultural Heritage Experiences Expo Center (when open): The 100,000㎡ venue exhibits treasures such as Chao embroidery and嵌瓷 (qian ci), with an immersive documentary decoding the origin of the Yingge Dance; Baihuajian Scenic Area (when closed): Ascend the Jiutian Xuannv Pavilion for a panoramic view of the coastline and the tranquil coexistence of religious architecture.
  • Yingge Dance: A Live Explosion of Eastern Power Dancers wear Water Margin facial makeup, holding sticks to perform the “Fierce Tiger Descends the Mountain” formation. With thunderous drumbeats and vigorous movements, capture the dynamic tension up close in what can be described as a “living textbook of intangible cultural heritage.”
  • Queshi Scenic Area: A Three-Dimensional Gallery of Mountains and Sea The “Sea, Mountain, Stone, and Cave” are four unique scenic features: walk through Dream Valley to explore the cliff carvings, or take a cable car (at your own expense) to the top of Piaoran Pavilion for a 360° panoramic view of the Shantou Port’s blue waves intertwined with the city’s buildings.
