World Heritage KumanoKodo Hiking Tour
- Daimon-zaka is an impressive cobblestone staircase slope which runs from the base of the valley to Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seiganto-ji Temple and Nachi waterfall. It is lined with centuries-old Japanese cedars (cryptomeria), cypress, camphor trees and bamboo groves. Daimon-zaka means “large gate slope” referring to a gate that once stood nearby. This is an excellent short walk on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route
- The actual stone staircase is about 600 meters long with 267 stairs. At the base of the slope is the impressive Meitosugi – “husband and wife cedar trees,” whose roots are entwined beneath the path
- At the top of Daimon-zaka, you can continue upstairs another 20 minutes to the shrine complex area and visit Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seiganto-Ji Temple. It is probably best to climb the stairs to the shrine grounds first and then walk down beside the pagoda to the falls

I had an amazing time with my guide, Kimi! Kimi was super knowledgeable and sweet during the tour, and was extremely engaging with my friend and I (we did a private tour for 2). We went to the tour knowing very little about the cultural significance aside from what we read online and finished a tour with a newfound appreciation for the Nachisan area. It is an understatement how much I enjoyed myself on this tour and I highly reccommend everyone to book this tour if they are going to see the nachi falls! Aside from the amazing guide, the tour company was also very responsive, providing email updates on who to contact and where to meet, making it very easy to find our guide on the day itself.
We will never forget the 2-days hiking Kumano-Kodo. Everything went smoothly, from the pick up to the drop off, the 5* onsen hotel, the professional guide (very good English, polite, and extremely knowledgeable) - Highly recommended!
The tour guide Kiyoko was friendly and kind, explained in detail, prepared snacks for us, and made reservations for us at a restaurant on the mountain the night before departure. The itinerary is very good and not too strenuous. At the same time, you can see the temples on the mountain and the Kumano Kodo World Heritage Site.
We very much enjoyed our half day tour with Karl, who was very knowledgeable, energetic, friendly, flexible and generous with his time and knowledge. Highly recommend.
The hotel was terrible, the room reeked of smoke, even the blankets, making it a very uncomfortable stay! The tour guide was excellent. It's recommended to tell guests which specific onsen hotel they will be staying at, rather than just writing "Kawano Onsen," as Kawano Onsen is a place, not a hotel name.
