The Koyasan Hidden Gems tour is a must-do activity when visiting Osaka, and I highly recommend it. The meeting point was convenient, and our guide and driver, Hanazawa, was very thoughtful. He had prepared AI-translated Chinese and English explanations about Koyasan and the origins of each attraction, which he played for us before we arrived at each site. This allowed us to have some background knowledge before our visit. Our trip was on a weekday, so there were very few tourists, making it a comfortable and peaceful experience. For lunch, we tried shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine); I didn't particularly love it, but it was worth trying. The visit to Seijin-in Temple was the icing on the cake. After completing the Okunoin tour, Hanazawa even prepared afternoon tea and green tea for each of us, which was incredibly considerate. We were very satisfied with the day's itinerary.
Yen, our driver and guide, drove very smoothly and was incredibly kind, enthusiastic, and attentive to us. There were only two of us that day, and our guide spoke both Chinese and English. In the car, he played audio guides (available in both Chinese and English). At each scenic spot, he thoughtfully introduced the key highlights to us first, or walked with us while explaining the important points, and then allowed us to explore freely. He managed the trip time very well, and his driving was very steady. What was most touching was that before visiting the Goma fire ritual and Okunoin, Yen thoughtfully prepared 'hankesa' (half-kesa) for us to wear around our necks, making our participation in the ceremony feel more solemn. After we finished walking through Okunoin (which required a bit of a hike) and returned to the parking lot, he even thoughtfully prepared dorayaki snacks and tea for us. You can truly feel how dedicated he is. I highly recommend joining his tour!
Beautiful and serene place. Take this if you want a convenient way to visit the sites but have time and silence to wander on your own. Thanks to our guide Yen who showed us the best spots off the usual track.
The tour guide did his best in speaking English. They may want to find someone who can better communicate with all the foreign tourists on this trip. However, all the arrangements were very good and many of us were satisfied. Without a day tour, it seems difficult to go there on your own. This trip is a must if you really want to visit this sacred place.
The Lingering Aftermath of a Pilgrimage to Mount Kōya The moment I left Mount Kōya, the tranquility of the mountains gently enveloped my heart like a soft cloth. After completing the pilgrimage, my body felt slightly weary, but my mind was surprisingly clear. The echoes of chanting in the temples and the rustling of leaves on the stone steps seemed to peel away the trivialities of everyday life, leaving only peace and gratitude. Walking Between History and Spirituality Visiting the graves of Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu on Mount Kōya is not merely about chasing famous names, but about feeling their presence in Japanese history and the complexities of the human heart. Standing before their memorial, my thoughts drifted through time: the textures woven from war and unification, power and faith, appear both distant and real in this mountain forest bathed in Buddhist light. That feeling of examining one's personal destiny within the long river of history makes one more humble in the face of their own choices and journey. The Surprise of Hanabishi's Kōya Cuisine Among the dining experiences on Mount Kōya, Hanabishi's Kōya cuisine is an unforgettable taste memory. The dishes are based on fresh, local ingredients, with flavors that are delicate and unpretentious. They retain the natural sweetness of the ingredients while revealing the chef's attention to detail. Each side dish is like a short poem, gently telling the story of the changing seasons in the mountains. Hot soup and pickles bring warmth to the chill, making one feel that the meal is not just about filling one's stomach, but a ritual of hospitality. It's very delicious and worth recommending to travelers looking for authentic flavors on Mount Kōya. Great Satisfaction from Small Things The seemingly insignificant moments of the trip—the morning mist, a lamp in the temple, a brief conversation with a monk, a cup of hot tea in a teahouse—ultimately became the gentlest footnotes to the entire journey. Sharing experiences with companions in the evening, or sitting alone in the courtyard, reminiscing about the day's scenery, these simple moments make one feel that life can be slowed down and is worth savoring. Internal Echoes After the Trip Back in everyday life, the tranquility of Mount Kōya still emerges inadvertently. What it taught me was the ability to maintain emptiness in the midst of noise: to set aside time for contemplation in the midst of busyness, allowing thoughts to be sorted and responded to. Worshipping the three historical figures made me understand more about the intersection of history and personal destiny; the meal at Hanabishi reminded me that true deliciousness often comes from respect for the land and the present moment. Taking these feelings back, life seems to have become more weighty and warmer. Conclusion Mount Kōya is not a place to be ticked off a list, but an experience that can be savored repeatedly. Whether it's contemplating historical figures or tasting a carefully prepared meal, this trip teaches one to see the world with a gentler eye. If you are planning to go, remember to slow down and let the mountains, temples, and a good meal slowly bring you back to your most authentic self.
Absolutely phenominal! Highly recommended. Yan is such a great guide and makes you feel really comfortable. He even went out of the way to help me with the tickets for Jukai ceremony (check out timings before you go). This trip was really worth it if you want to experience one of the most spiritual places on earth. Perfect for a day trip if you don’t want to spend the night, you’ll pretty much cover everything. There is english audio description played in the car so you’ll be alright!
The Tour is fantastic dan Good for someone who want to search different atmosphere. Koyasan offer tranquility and silence as you walk through the area. Also don't forget to meet Cat Master Station Nitama and Gotama as sidetrip. Mr Yanlei, our tourguide and Driver, Very helpful and great as he make sure everything proceed smoothly.
Route: The route was perfect for us! Most tours go to either Koyasan or Wakayama city attractions, and this was the only one I could find that went to both Koyasan and Kishi station to see the Tama cats. We had enough time at each stop and it was well organised. Guide: Our guide and driver was Hanazawa-san, and he was very kind and helpful! He got us audio guides, leaflets, and had very good communication for where the meeting points were, and times at each location. He sent us recommendations for local food, cafes and shrines on WhatsApp. He also offered to take photos for us. We thought he was a really good guide as he allowed us to relax and explore in each place, but made sure we weren’t lost and seeing the most important locations. Overall: I 100% recommend this tour. It was my first time to Wakayama prefecture, and it was a beautiful and well organised tour that allows you to see a spiritual location as well as a cute and whimsical place as well.
