Fukuoka Grand Sumo Tournament Half-Day Experience with English Guide

we easily found our guides at the train station and walked a few blocks with them to the event. the staff were extremely kind and helpful and spoke clear English. They gave us a little verbal history about Sumo as we all wore small headsets in one ear. she gave us little updates during the matches so we knew something more about the athletes, too. They even walked us to our seats inside the arena. We bought chair seats- they were behind the box seats, but the view was still great.

It was a great experience, I went solo, our sumo tour guide was so good, he explained in detail the sumo history, we were supplied with earbuds so he made comments during the entire matches. The tour started on time at the meeting point. It was a pleasant moment. I enjoyed it very much.

Overall excellent, but unfortunately, the meeting time or ticket collection couldn't be earlier, resulting in missing the beginning of the game or too short a time for shopping.

love the smooth transaction process and the experience. the guide was very earnest in sharing what he knows. the staff that came with him were attentive and helpful. will definitely book again. I hope in the future Klook can offer options where folks can watch sumo tournaments the whole day instead of just the makuuchi matches. but overall I love the whole experience.

This is a guided tour meant for total beginners of sumo. Included was a ticket (we sat in chair seats) a pamphlet and a small drawing of how wrestlers are divided into divisions. We got a one-way radio so we could clearly hear what the guide told us on the way from the meeting point and outside the arena, and he was really nice. There was no commentary during the tournament though, which is what we though we bought. So as soon as we sat down we were pretty much on our own. Chair seats are a little slim and it is a little difficult to sit with drinks and souvenirs. Still a good experience with the tournament for the 3 hours we were there since we already had knowledge of sumo and the view was fine. We arrived half way through the Juryo division (about 15:00), but we would have liked to get the ticket earlier on the day to watch the lower divisions and get souvenirs and snacks. Another time we will probably just order the ticket online and go for a full day without guide.

Regarding the actual experience of watching sumo, nothing to fault at all. As for the organisation, it’s been largely embarrassing. The guide walked very slowly, wasting precious time on the way to Kokusai Center and spoke chaotically about random facts of Hakata historical past that had nothing to do with the purpose of this trip. He then stopped outside of the venue and started talking about basic sumo facts that would have been printed & handed over to us at the entrance anyway. He carried on while crowds were walking past & filling up the hall until I urged him to let us get inside since we’re already late. We found our seats but struggled to experience other things inside that were special & worth to be seen due to incompetence & lack of urgency from organisers. I’d strongly recommend to adjust the timeline as current format ruins the experience of great event that Sumo Basho actually is, it’d be fairly easy to simply start 30 min earlier providing better experience to everyone.
