Shirogane Blue Pond

Scenic spot
★ 4.8 (2K+ reviews) • 37K+ booked
Shirogane Blue Pond is named for its striking blue waters that can transform from light blue to deep turquoise, was formed as a result of a dam created at the Biei River. Located near the Shirogane Onsen hot spring town, Aoiike, as it's also known, derives its deep blue shade from natural minerals dissolved in the water. Over time, this Hokkaido Blue Pond has become a popular attraction, with an important role in protecting Biei from potential eruptions of Mount Tokachidake.

The tour went smoothly. The operator and guide (Grace) messaged us a day before to give us her contact details so we can get in touch with her easily. All the sites that we went to were very interesting, most specially the zoo where you can see the animals which we in the tropics only see on TV. Was in awe with the polar bear and truly delighted with the penguins. For me this was the highlight of the tour.

in general it is inconvenient to travel out of Hokkaido city with no car, having a tour bus helps to move from one placr to another in comfort. Journey are long & cold, it help to have a good bus driver & bus tour guide (mine was Joe)to provide safe travelling to & from destination. will give ample time for us to wake up with his own alarm. the destinantion wise, we were fortunate to be able to play with snow mobile (120000 for 1 pax & 160000 for 2 shared pax). rmb to bring cash! they didnt accept card. night terrace & waterfall was pretty. i'll recommend people to attend this.

The tour guide sister is amazing and the service is very good. But because there are too many schedules, sometimes she is a little rushed, but generally it is really good ~

Although the itinerary was a little rushed, the overall experience was good. The tour guide shared Hokkaido-related experience and knowledge, which was very useful. It is recommended that you prepare your own lunch first, so you don’t need to rush for time at the zoo and queue up to buy lunch.

The tour guide Grace is very professional. Transportation is not convenient during the snow season. It is just right to participate in such a one-day tour. It is a good experience and I have a lot of fun!

Must-Visit Attractions Near Shirogane Blue Pond

1. Shirahige Falls

Shirahige Waterfall, a part of the Blue River, adds to the Blue Pond's blue color. The water flowing through rocks creates a stunning 'white beard' effect, especially magical when frozen in winter. This waterfall supplies water to the pond, where aluminum from the surrounding cliffs mixes in. When the aluminum-infused water reaches the pond, it reflects sunlight specially, resulting in the beautiful blue hue of the pond.

2. Mt. Tokachi

Visit Mount Tokachi, a large and active volcano within Daisetsuzan National Park, which forms part of the Hyakumeizan and is popular for its loop trail, including the neighboring Mount Biei. You can also hike in Mount Biei to enjoy delightful terrain and breathtaking panoramas. If you have limited time, both mountains can be tackled individually as day hikes, taking approximately 6 hours round-trip.

3. Mt. Tomuraushi

Mt. Tomuraushi, a rocky peak along the Daisetsuzan trekking route, is the habitat of the endangered Japanese pika, a small furry creature known as an ice-age survivor. The stunning scenery and panoramic vistas can make you feel like you're in a different world away from Japan.

4. Daisetsuzan National Park

Daisetsuzan is Hokkaido's most expansive national park, protecting a mountainous region of wilderness that is larger than the size of some of Japan's smaller prefectures. This is the perfect spot for hikers, nature enthusiasts, deer, and brown bears alike. Plus, Daisetsuzan National Park is the initial spot in Japan to see the splendid transition of fall foliage and the first snow each autumn.

5. Shirogane Onsen

At the base of the Tokachi Mountain Range, this hot spring village gives you a spectacular view of the entire mountain range. Named "Shirogane Onsen," translating to "white gold" in Japanese, the hot spring was named after the successful discovery of a precious platinum-like source in 1950. When you drive down the picturesque Shirakaba Kaido (white birch road) extending about 4 km from downtown Biei, you'll arrive at this emotionally enriching hot spring retreat.
