Things to do in Porto

I booked the boat trip through the Klook platform on the morning of the departure day, for the 2:30 PM slot. I arrived 20 minutes before departure to queue, and once on board, I could choose my own seat. After the boat set off, I was able to admire the beautiful scenery of the Douro River and the surroundings of the Dom Luís I Bridge. It was truly stunning.

Meeting at 7:45 AM and returning at 9:00 PM, the one-way drive is about 3 hours but it's worth it. The two attractions along the way are nice. The Porto city area is walked through with a guided tour, focusing on key points and introductions, making it a worthwhile trip. If you want to explore more deeply, you would have to stay for two or three days, worth a visit.

I was a bit worried about going alone before departure, but I really wanted to experience the 516 Suspension Bridge, so I signed up anyway. I was very lucky to meet a fantastic tour guide, Danny! 👍 He not only provided detailed information about the attractions along the way but also kept us laughing, which made me feel comfortable chatting with everyone despite my broken English. The other group members were also very friendly. The tour included a delicious risotto and fish for lunch. Visiting several attractions in one day made for a truly fulfilling and highly recommended itinerary! Thanks to the travel agency and Danny for helping me create such wonderful memories.

Our guide Jose Perreira was warm and friendly. he did a good job sharing about wine history of the Duora region, and quite informative about agriculture like olives and the negative effects of the eucalyptus trees to native species. Love educational info on port wine vs table wine getting a better understanding of the different port wine varieties. Enjoyed the wine tasting and the relaxing cruise!

The Douro River offers various types of tours. If you're short on time and on a budget, you can opt for this one-hour cruise. The boat does not provide explanations of the sights (bridges), so it's not considered a guided tour. For the meeting point, we followed the link to the second floor of the riverside shopping area, but it turned out to be the boat company's counter with the umbrella by the river. The scenery was beautiful and did not disappoint; it's still one of the activities you should plan when visiting Porto.

Stepping into the church, I originally thought it would just be a light show, but I didn't expect it to feel like entering a conversation about "time." The stone walls were originally cold and heavy, bearing hundreds of years of prayer and history, but when the projection lit up, the walls began to flow, as if they were breathing. Those light patterns, like neural networks, stretched across the vault and climbed up the columns, like cracks in time, and like the textures of memory. The most shocking thing wasn't the dazzling colors, but the moment when darkness and light alternated. When the space was almost covered with gray and white lines, and only the altar was slightly shimmering with golden light, I suddenly understood what "awe" felt like. It wasn't the oppression brought by religion itself, but the insignificance of humans in the face of vast history and the universe. Technology didn't destroy the sacred, but rather added a new language to it, allowing the ancient building to be understood in a new way. Looking up, I felt like I was standing on the axis of time. Above was flowing light, and below was silent stone. The place where the two met was the present me. This light show made me think about how humans are always looking for faith in different ways in different generations. In the past, it was murals and sculptures, now it is projections and lasers, but the essence has not changed—we still yearn to be illuminated by light. Leaving the church, I didn't rush to take more photos, but let that peace remain in my heart. Perhaps the real shock wasn't how gorgeous the scene was, but that it made me pause briefly and re-feel the distance between myself and the world.

The moment the lead singer closed her eyes, it was as if she was talking to the past; two guitars echoed softly, gently lifting up the longing and destiny. That faint sadness is not pessimism, but a kind of understanding and acceptance of life. Listening to the melody echoing in the air, the heart slowly settled down. We often see magnificent scenery that amazes us on our travels, but such a quiet performance truly brings us closer to the soul of a city. Fado sings not about skill, but about the years, about parting, about the tenderness after love. When the last note fell, the candlelight was still flickering slightly, and the heart had already been deeply touched.
