What to expect
Pōhatu is the largest Australasian Little Penguin colony on mainland New Zealand. The family has worked over the last three decades protecting White-flippered Penguins (Eudyptula minor albosignata), Canterbury's variant of Australasian Little Penguin, from introduced predators.
This gives you great insight into the life of a penguin and the chance to see the birds up-close, and a unique opportunity to watch them socializing on the water.
You will discover tranquil Pohatu bay where you will set off for a walk around the colony to monitor nesting sites and make sure that our little penguins are doing well. Then, you will have the unique opportunity to spot some undisturbed from our hides, socializing on the water with provided binoculars and telescope.

Reviews
Very special experience, got a chance to have close contact with the penguins. recommended activity in Akaroa
Highly recommended, excellent value for money. Many thanks to Kevin for taking us to the mountaintop to see the beautiful scenery and for explaining the habits and conservation efforts of the little blue penguins. Your passion for conservation and love for nature truly inspired us; we absolutely loved this experience.
A nice guided tour to the natural homes of the little penguins. It depends on luck so not always able to see penguins, as it’s more of an eco-informative journey. We did see some penguin chicks in their houses, an adult, and many seals. May get cold so bring warm clothing and walking shoes.
The drive from the gathering point to Flea Bay took about 30 minutes. On the way, our tour guide Kelvin introduced us to a lot of history of Akaroa. After arriving at Flea Bay, we can feed the sheep first, then put on protective clothing and set out to see the penguins! Highly recommended
Super passionate tour guides and overall wonderful tour end-to-end, with plenty of time for photos and viewing. Binoculars available per pair and one scope per group.
It was an amazing tour. The lady stuff who guided us was so generous. We were worried that we took two year old son with us but she not only gently led us but also cheered my son to be happy. We saw sheep, blue penguins and fur seals. Even more, they kindly contacted us after the tour when we lost a stuff. We appreciate it. Thank you so much.
Very good experience. The transfer was good, the drivers were obviously very experienced driving a van on this kind of terrain. We were two vans with each 8 passengers. On the way, we stopped two times to make photos and to explain some of the history of the place. We were able to get a look at two penguins, that were changing their feathers in little boxes, for each ca. 1 minute. Afterwards we tried to see penguins on the sea, which I didn't manage with my binoculars, but I was able to see them trough the guide's telescope. After the penguins arrived at land, I was also able to see them with the binoculars. A bit before the trip, you need to get in touch with the company by yourself to find out, when the trip starts. Wasn't a problem in our case, but I think it wouldn't be too much effort to just trigger emails at participants containing this info.
Great experience to understand the ecosystem of penguins and rich history of Akaroa shared by the knowledgeable guide.
