What to expect

[Katsuoji Temple] Katsuoji Temple, also known as “Win-Luck Temple” and “Win-Luck Daruma Temple,” is one of the most historically significant temples in the Kansai region. It is famous for praying for victory and good fortune, and is renowned as a temple that brings success in all aspects of life, including exams, disaster relief, healing illnesses, sports, and career. Visitors can purchase a blank Daruma doll, paint its right eye after making a wish, and then bring it back to paint the left eye once the wish is fulfilled.

[Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple] No tours on Wednesdays and Saturdays (regular holidays) At Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple, 1200 Rakan stone statues stand quietly. These statues have rich expressions and diverse styles; some hold cats, others smile, and each one is unique. In addition, the temple houses a touchable statue of Kannon Bodhisattva, a Jizo Bodhisattva statue said to prevent fires and ensure longevity, and the “Three Treasures Bell” representing different Buddhist principles.

[Arashiyama] After the Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple tour, you can take the vehicle to the vicinity of Arashiyama Togetsukyo Bridge, or walk there independently. The following are some recommended sightseeing spots in order of location. It takes about 1 hour to walk to Togetsukyo Bridge, and you can freely choose to visit 2-4 of these spots.

  • Saga-Toriimoto: Wander through traditional machiya old streets, enjoy a cup of matcha, browse for small antiques, and experience the charm of old Kyoto.
  • Mikami Shrine: Make a wish for your hair, and find cute hair ornament souvenirs.
  • Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Path: Walk on the cool stone path, listen to the rustling bamboo leaves, and take cinematic photos at will.
  • Tenryu-ji Temple: Explore a World Heritage site and its Zen gardens.
  • Togetsukyo Bridge: Stand on the bridge to watch the Hozugawa River flow and take in the panoramic view of Arashiyama.
The temple is filled with "Lucky Daruma" dolls, with over a thousand in total. They can be found under the eaves, beside the stone steps, and on the water. There are also "Daruma fortune-telling slips," a unique feature of Katsuoji Temple.

Review for: Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple Day Trip

Many thanks to our tour guide and driver, Mr. Zhang Yan-jin. He provided clear instructions before the trip, and we boarded the bus smoothly on the day of the tour. The guide thoughtfully asked everyone about their preferences for temperature and drop-off locations, and also helped us purchase admission tickets at the counter. The entire trip was not tiring; there was some travel time between each stop, allowing us to rest and enjoy the air conditioning. This saved a lot of hassle with transfers and travel fatigue, especially during the hot summer. I really enjoyed the Katsuo-ji Temple and Arashiyama portions of the itinerary. Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple, however, was quite small and the entrance fee was expensive. I felt it wasn't as worthwhile unless visited during the autumn leaves or cherry blossom seasons. Perhaps the company could consider removing this stop during the summer and extending the time in Arashiyama, which would be perfectly fine, as it would allow for a more leisurely lunch, browsing, and photo opportunities. Overall, we easily visited three attractions, and I'm very grateful. 😊

Review for: Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple Day Trip

I was very lucky to see snow at Katsuo-ji Temple this time. The time spent at the three attractions throughout the trip was good and not too rushed. The biggest advantage of participating in Klook is that it solves the transportation problem, and you can take a good rest on the bus. The only downside is that the front and rear seats were a little small. Finally, I would like to thank Xiao Qin for taking us from the parking lot to the entrance, and for kindly reminding us that the meeting time was approaching before the meeting time.

Review for: Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple Day Trip

Since our original trip to Tenryu-ji Temple was canceled due to insufficient participants, the travel agency thoughtfully arranged an alternative itinerary to Kifune Shrine, Arashiyama, and Sanzen-in Temple. Our guide and driver, Yasuo, was kind and friendly. He introduced the attractions and provided helpful tips for making the most of our time at each site. He also made an effort to park the tour vehicle as close as possible to the attractions for our convenience when getting on and off. On the return journey, he even dropped me off at my hotel. This was a relaxed and comfortable trip. Thank you, Yasuo!

Review for: Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple One-Day Tour [English Guide]

The day before, you'll receive a text message with the meeting point and time. Just arrive on time, and you'll be ready for a pleasant departure. Since it was a combined tour, our guide, Yurika, first introduced everything in English and then explained it in Chinese, which was very thoughtful. At each stop, she clearly announced the meeting time and location, and overall, we had plenty of time to enjoy ourselves.

Review for: Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple Day Trip

Excellent trip and one of the most efficient way to cover a lot of ground in a day. Our driver Kangfu was a kind gentleman and was punctual on every stop. We got a brief introduction to the temples and places we were about to visit. Katsuoji temple and Atago Nenbutsuji temples were really pretty. My only feedback would be a longer stop at Atago Nenbutsuji, to explore the village around. It was really beautiful.
