Fantastic 5.0
Our driver and guide, Joseph, was very professional and responsible, and even took us to explore some extra views. We were so lucky to have clear weather today and saw sperm whales, dolphins, and seals!

Great 4.0
The whale watching activity was canceled due to bad weather, but the tour guide seemed inexperienced and unable to arrange and execute a backup plan in a timely manner. When we stopped along the way, they also didn't announce the meeting time. Luckily, the group members were quite good and didn't cause any delays. The guide did provide some brief commentary along the way, and there was someone in our group who didn't understand Chinese, but the guide hardly used English to accommodate them.

Fantastic 5.0
Our tour guide was incredibly enthusiastic, taking us to Tongue Point, a spot very close to the sea lions. The itinerary was well-planned, and even though the road conditions weren't the smoothest, we felt completely at ease with our guide. You definitely shouldn't miss this!

Fantastic 5.0
It was a choppy ride with gale warning and high chance of sea sickness. Thankful that the ride proceeded and we got to see marama and tiaki whales and a school of dusky dolphins and fur seals

What to know before visiting Kaikoura

Top experiences at a glance for the year

Kaikoura’s most-booked experiences are outdoor and sports activities, followed by guided tours, and demand moves through the year with a clear peak in November and a low around September. Expect activity bookings to climb into the late spring months and to be quieter in early spring.

Activities matched to different travellers

Families will find guided tours a good fit — they offer a range of options and the widest spread of choices to suit different ages and interests. Couples often choose outdoor and sports activities for memorable, nature-focused experiences that feel special and active. Solo travellers and small groups will also find both categories appealing: tours for convenience and variety, and outdoor activities for a more hands-on, adventurous day out.

What travellers from Australia should book ahead

Most visitors here keep plans flexible — typical bookings are made around a month out — but the earliest planners book roughly two months in advance, and that matters most for the November peak. If you’re travelling in November, it’s wise to lock in must-do activities earlier than you might for quieter months.

How categories compare on price and who they suit

Tours are the easiest way in, sitting at the lower end of the typical price range and offering the widest spread of options to suit budget and comfort levels. Outdoor and sports activities tend to be slightly pricier on average and appeal to travellers after more active, nature-led experiences. Together the two categories cover most traveller needs, from entry-level guided options to higher-end outdoor adventures.
