comfy ride going around sf. if you are short on time and want an overview of all the key touristy places in san francisco this is a good tour to do so. there are some places that can’t bring you to such as the painted ladies as tour buses cant go there. thanks to michelle and judith for the nice tour.

The pick-up location is convenient, and the route passes by all the classic sights. The bus is clean, and the commentary on the attractions is lively and engaging. I highly recommend Big Bus as a tool for independent travelers.

48-hr BigBus tours is one of the most convenient and amazing tour you can have if it is your first time in SF. With the best insights of each stop, we thought we should book an extra day just to enjoy the ride through the city! And thanks to Klook for finding the best deals.

There's no need to arrive too early; about 20 minutes beforehand is fine. Even if you don't arrive at Pier 33 early, as long as you get there before the boat departs and exchange your ticket, you'll be fine. You'll need to go to the ticket booth first to exchange for a physical ticket. Once you arrive, you can explore on your own following the suggested route, and there are also audio guides available in various languages. After completing the Alcatraz tour, you can walk to the pier to catch the next available boat back to the bay. Upon returning to the bay, you can walk to the ticket exchange point at Pier 39 to continue with a one-hour bay cruise. Please note that the QR code for this ticket exchange will be sent to your email, not the Klook QR code. You can choose your preferred cruise time when exchanging your ticket. The cruise will take you under the Golden Gate Bridge, allowing you to admire the bridge from a different perspective.

Tour was good since it takes you around the city but some stops are a bit far from touristy spots. We had to walk a lot uphill just to see Lombard. Aquarium suddenly wasn’t part of the tour on the day we joined so we didn’t get the tickets that were supposed to be included. Sunset tour was worth it though.

What to know about Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island is a must-see spot in San Francisco Bay, known for its history as a military prison and a maximum-security federal penitentiary. It was considered the most secure prison in America, as it is more isolated than other federal prisons. The federal penitentiary also used to hold famous prisoners like Al Capone and Robert Stroud. Today, you can explore the old cell house, take part in Alcatraz tours, and enjoy amazing views of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge. With its mix of mystery, history, and scenery, Alcatraz Island is a one-of-a-kind destination you won’t want to miss when you visit San Francisco!

Things to do on Alcatraz Island

Take the Alcatraz Cellhouse audio tour

Visit the former Alcatraz cellhouse and hear stories from past prisoners and guards. You'll learn about their daily lives, escape attempts, and important events that happened in the military prison from 1934 to 1963.

It's a cool way to learn about the former prison's history while walking through the actual prison. Plus, this award-winning audio tour is included in your ferry ticket!

Join the night tour

If you love spooky adventures, you should try exploring Alcatraz at night! In this special tour, you can enjoy activities closed during the day, such as entry to the hospital wing and in-depth guided tours by island historians.

Attend ranger talks and tours

Alcatraz Island has lots of engaging tours and talks you can attend, led by rangers and volunteers. You'll learn more about the former federal prison as the rangers take you on interpretive walks, cell door demonstrations, and historical talks. These are available daily, and you can check the schedule upon arrival on the island.

Walk through the Gardens of Alcatraz

See the flowers bloom at the historic Gardens of Alcatraz! The island used to be bare, but military staff and inmates helped turn it into a colorful garden. After the prison closed in 1963, the gardens were forgotten---until volunteers brought them back to life. Now, you can enjoy bright flowers, heirloom roses, and cool succulents all around the gardens!
