Woohoo! You're off to Werribee Open Range Zoo! The next question is what's the weather in Werribee like and what will you need to take with you. Never fear - we have the answers!
The weather in Werribee can be - in true Melbourne style - a bit of everything, so we have you sorted on what to wear, what to bring, rainy day plans and more.
We are going to go right ahead and assume you have already bought your Werribee Zoo. If you haven't, make sure you do it online as tickets are no longer sold at the gate so you'll be flat out of luck if you just turn up.

What’s the weather in Werribee like?

    Weather in Werribee
The hippos aren't too concerned about the weather in Werribee!
Werribee Zoo is located in the south-west of Melbourne.
The climate here is mild and warm on most days, however Werribee is a city with significant rainfall — so you need to be prepared for showers. Even the driest months have a decent amount of rainfall.

Statistics provided by BOM for Laverton RAAF (nearest comparable weather site to Werribee)
The winter months AND the months of spring rain on average 15 days of the month, so there is a VERY high chance you'll experience a shower or two when you visit Werribee Zoo.
To avoid heavy rain, we recommend visiting around late February & March when the rainfall is at its lowest, and the temperature is a mild low of 12.5°C and high of 23.6°C.

What should you wear to Werribee Zoo?

Some of the residents are not fazed by the weather - just don't forget to feed them!
    Warmer months
A day at the zoo is basically a day spent outside so you need to make sure you're prepared! Temperatures can get hot, especially during summer where the daily maximum sits around 26°C, so make sure you pack your sun safety essentials - SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK and SLIDE - otherwise known as slip on a UV protected shirt, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade (more on this later!) and slide on your sunnies. It is Australia after all.
If you’re planning on visiting Hippo Beach water play zone, make sure to bring bathers and a towel too.
Don't forget the summer months still have around 10 days of rain per month, so pop in a raincoat and brolly to be on the safe side!
    Cooler months
During winter it can get a bit chilly, so warmer clothing is a must. Throw in an extra scarf and gloves, especially if you plan on an early start where it can be around 4°C. You should also absolutely expect rain so waterproof jackets and shoes are a very good idea.
At all times of the year, this is a day where your step count will be impressive, so make sure you've got your comfiest shoes on as well - and no, we're not talking ugg boots!

What should you bring to Werribee Zoo?

    Werribee Zoo
Werribee Zoo is such a fun and exhilarating day out!
If you've been paying attention, you know that your wet weather gear is already on the list as it's a safe bet the weather in Werribee will be a chance of rain!
It's also a good idea to pack some snacks and lunch so you can take a good sustenance break before the day of exploring continues. The Zoo does have picnic and BBQ facilities available so you can make use of these too.
Not to worry though if you have no time to food prep, there are lots of places to grab a bite at the Zoo. Enjoy a snack while watching the cheeky meerkats play at the Meerkat Bistro or relax on the lawn with a take away meal. The Zoo also serves traditional South African sausages, pies, pizzas, rotisserie chickens, salads, sandwiches, drinks and ice creams.
Some of the smaller food outlets aren't open every day – so check with a staff member when you arrive.
