Many come to New Zealand, particularly the South Island to be in awe of the magnificent glaciers. On top of that, there's a variety of adventurous and special glacier tours and experiences you can do - from heli hikes, walks, flights, ice climbs, and more! Here are our top glacier picks and suggestions on what exciting activities you can be up to.

    1. Franz Josef Glacier

    Heli Hike
Probably the ultimate crowd-favourite is the Franz Josef Glacier. Well, just picture this... flowing rivers of ice going down an emerald green rainforest. They also say no days are ever the same when you visit Franz Josef as it's constantly evolving and moves faster than the average of any other glacier!

    Must-do:

Heli-hiking tops the list, of course! The heli-hike is a four-hour combination of a thrilling helicopter ride and a hike that will allow you to truly experience the majestic Franz Josef Glacier.
Another option for a side trip would be a visit to the Franz Josef Hot Pools if you want a more relaxed day after doing all the adventures possible in the glaciers!

    2. Fox Glacier

Just a stone's throw away (more accurately, a short 30-minute drive from Franz Josef Glacier) is Fox Glacier. Majestic as it is on its own, tucked away in the base of the amazing Southern Alps, adventure in the Fox Glacier awaits.

    Must-do:

The thrill-seekers cannot miss out on Fox It Up Heli Ice Climbing Adventure - 9 hours of pure adrenaline. You'll be first off on a thrilling helicopter flight to your ice climbing location, and then climbing and hiking through spectacular ice caves and arches is next.
If you've decided on visiting the Fox Glacier, next up is to look for your accommodation! Read up on our best picks of hotels and bnb's in the area.

    3. Tasman Glacier

The largest glacier of New Zealand is located on the other side of the Southern Alps - the Tasman Glacier. It conveniently is nestled below Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, so make sure at least a day in this national park is in your itinerary!
The Tasman Glacier has a beautiful lake, and you'll only have to do a short, easy walk to view the glacier.

    Must-do:

    Heli
Why not do a Grand Traverse Scenic Flight Around Mt. Cook?! The Grand Traverse is recognised as the premier Aoraki Mount Cook flight-seeing experience. This magnificent flight encompasses two World Heritage National Parks and 200 km of New Zealand’s most memorable and breathtaking scenery.
We know it's quite hard to choose from if you can just do them all but if you're having a bit of a hard time deciding, here's a more in-depth review of the first two glaciers!
