You’ve probably got a blank 2027 calendar open in one tab and a flight search in another, trying to work out which Mondays are actually free. It’s worth sorting now, because the best leave hacks get booked first. The short version is that
Australia public holidays 2027 give you seven national days, and every state adds its own on top.
This year has a few quirks. Anzac Day lands on a Sunday, Christmas and Boxing Day fall on a weekend, and Australia Day sits on a Tuesday. Below you’ll find the national dates, then every state, then ways to turn a handful of leave days into a 9 or 10 day break.
Australia public holidays 2027: the national dates
Most people just want to know which dates are safe to plan around. These apply in every state and territory.
Holiday | 2027 date | What to know |
|---|
New Year’s Day | Fri 1 Jan | A three-day weekend, no leave needed |
Australia Day | Tue 26 Jan | Midweek, so take Mon 25 Jan for a four-day break |
Easter break | Fri 26 Mar to Mon 29 Mar | Four days off in every state |
Anzac Day | Sun 25 Apr | Some states add a Monday (see below) |
Christmas Day | Sat 25 Dec | Falls on a weekend |
Boxing Day | Sun 26 Dec | Falls on a weekend |
Easter is the only one that comes as a block. Good Friday and Easter Monday are national holidays, Easter Saturday and Sunday are holidays in most states, and Western Australia skips the Saturday while Tasmania skips both. Because Christmas falls on a weekend, every state gives you Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December off instead.
Anzac Day 2027 public holiday: what happens on a Sunday
This is the 2027 quirk people ask about most. Anzac Day falls on Sunday 25 April, and whether you get a Monday off depends on your state.
State or territory | Monday 26 April off? |
|---|
New South Wales | Yes, additional public holiday |
ACT | Yes |
Queensland | Yes, Anzac Day is observed on the Monday |
Northern Territory | Yes |
Western Australia | Yes, additional public holiday |
Victoria | No, Sunday only |
South Australia | No, Sunday only |
Tasmania | No, Sunday only |
Victoria,
South Australia and
Tasmania list Anzac Day on the Sunday only, with no substitute Monday. Fair Work and the Northern Territory’s own list both show Monday 26 April for the NT, so it sits with NSW, the ACT, Queensland and WA.
Klook Tip: Dawn services still happen on Sunday 25 April everywhere, even where the day off moves to Monday.
2027 public holidays by state
Here’s where it gets fiddly: the same Monday can be Labour Day in one state and a normal work day next door. Australia public holidays 2027 differ a lot by state, so the tables below list only the dates that change. Add the national dates from above to get your full year.
King’s Birthday, Labour Day and Melbourne Cup in 2027
Most of the country stops on Monday 14 June for King’s Birthday 2027. Queensland holds it on Monday 4 October and Western Australia on Monday 27 September, which gives both states a long weekend later in the year.
Labour Day 2027 comes in four flavours. Western Australia goes first on Monday 1 March, and Victoria follows on Monday 8 March, the same day as Canberra Day in the ACT, Adelaide Cup Day in SA and Eight Hours Day in Tasmania. Queensland and the NT take Monday 3 May (May Day in the NT), and NSW, the ACT and SA hold theirs on Monday 4 October.
The Melbourne Cup 2027 public holiday is Tuesday 2 November, and it’s Victoria only. Some regional areas in Victoria hold their Cup holiday on a different date, so check your local council if you’re outside Melbourne.

Easter long weekend 2027: four days off, ten with leave
The Easter long weekend 2027 runs from Good Friday, 26 March, to Easter Monday, 29 March, in every state. Take Tuesday 30 March to Friday 2 April off and you get ten days in a row for four days of leave. It also lands at the start of the autumn school holidays in Victoria and Queensland, so fares and rooms go early.
If you’d rather stay local, Melbourne has the classic Easter drive. The
Great Ocean Road works as a day trip or a slow weekend, and our guide to the
best Australia road trips has more routes if you want to build a longer loop.
The
Great Ocean Road and 12 Apostles Tour costs about A$112 and covers the Twelve Apostles, Torquay Surf Beach and Lorne in one day from Melbourne. It suits first-timers who’d rather not do the driving, and you’ll spot koalas and kangaroos on the way. The downside is the length: it’s a 13.5-hour day, and you meet at a set point rather than being picked up at your hotel.
For ten days away, Japan is the big one.
Tokyo and
Kyoto fit comfortably, and cherry blossom season usually peaks around late March to early April. Sale fares from Sydney and Melbourne have started around A$1,050 return, though Easter weeks cost more.
Bali is the shorter hop at about six hours direct from Sydney, with returns running from roughly A$450 to A$1,200 depending on timing.
Klook Tip: Fly out Thursday night, 25 March, so you land with the full ten days ahead of you.
New Year’s Day and Australia Day in Sydney
Two summer holidays land close together in January, and Sydney Harbour makes a good base for both. New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January, so everyone gets a three-day weekend with no leave. Australia Day is Tuesday 26 January, so one day of leave on Monday 25 January gives you four days off. The
Sydney Harbour area is where the city’s New Year’s fireworks happen, so book early if you want to be near the water.
If you’re staying a few nights, our page on
things to do in Sydney covers the rest of the city. Here are two stays close to the harbour.
Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection
Pier One Sydney Harbour starts from about A$390 a night on current rates, so it’s the splurge pick for a harbour weekend. It suits couples and anyone who wants to walk to the Harbour Bridge (about 400 metres) and BridgeClimb. Walsh Bay is on the doorstep, and guests rate the room views highly. The catch is that breakfast costs extra (around A$50 for adults) and a few guests mention road and train noise, so add a quiet-room request when you book.
Address: 11 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay, Sydney
Check-in: 3 PM | Check-out: 11 AM
Sir Stamford at Circular Quay
Rates at
Sir Stamford at Circular Quay vary a lot by date, so run your exact long-weekend dates first. It’s the pick if you want ferries and trains close by, with Circular Quay station about 300 metres away and the Museum of Sydney a short walk. It suits first-timers who’d rather not rely on taxis. One honest downside: parking costs extra and has to be arranged ahead, so it works best if you’re not arriving by car.
Address: 93 Macquarie St, Circular Quay, Sydney
Check-in: 3 PM | Check-out: 11 AM
For a night out, the
Sydney Harbour Sunset Dinner Cruise starts at A$129 for two hours on the water with a three-course dinner. It works for couples and family groups, and you’ll pass the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Drinks are bought separately, and guests say the food is average for the price, so go for the views. Arrive 30 minutes before departure to collect your ticket.
Anzac Day to May Day: a ten-day Gold Coast stretch
Queenslanders and Territorians get a rare gift in 2027. Anzac Day moves to Monday 26 April, and Labour Day (May Day in the NT) follows on Monday 3 May. Take Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 April off and you get ten days for four days of leave. It also falls in Queensland term time, so you’ll miss the Easter school holiday crowds.
The Gold Coast is an easy fit. Warner Bros. Movie World is about 18.5 kilometres from Surfers Paradise, and the beach is a short walk from both stays below. At today’s starting rate, nine nights at the first one comes to about A$1,540, and rates usually rise at peak times.
Novotel Surfers Paradise
Novotel Surfers Paradise starts from about A$171 a night on current rates, which makes it the budget-friendly base on this list. It suits couples and small groups who want a grocery store downstairs, Paradise Centre about 100 metres away and the light rail about 400 metres from the door. Rooms are around 30 square metres, and plenty have ocean or hinterland views. The trade-offs are a A$200 cash deposit per stay and A$27 a day for covered parking.
Address: Cnr Surfers Paradise Blvd and Hanlan St, Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast
Check-in: 2 PM | Check-out:11 AM
Hilton Surfers Paradise Hotel & Residences
Hilton Surfers Paradise Hotel starts from about A$219 a night on current rates, and the residences are where it earns that price for families. Two-bedroom apartments run about 85 to 100 square metres, there’s a kids’ pool plus indoor and outdoor pools, and the beach is about 500 metres away. Guests mention washing machines in the apartments, which helps on a ten-day stay. Plan for a A$300 deposit per stay and A$27 a night for parking.
Address: 6 Orchid Ave, Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast
Check-in: 3 PM | Check-out:11 AM
King’s Birthday and Melbourne Cup: short breaks from Sydney and Melbourne
Some of the best breaks are the shortest. King’s Birthday on Monday 14 June gives NSW and Victoria a three-day weekend, which is enough time to see
Blue Mountains National Park without rushing. For more ideas outside the city, see our guide to
road trips from Sydney.
The
Blue Mountains Deluxe Day Tour is about A$156 with hotel pick-up from selected Sydney CBD hotels. It suits first-timers, because you get Sydney Zoo, an Aboriginal cultural talk, the Three Sisters and three Scenic World rides in one go. It’s an 11.5-hour day, and guests say lunch in Leura is short, so pick your spot before you arrive.
Melbourne Cup week works the same way. The race is on a Tuesday, so one day of leave on Monday 1 November gives you four days off. The
Phillip Island half-day penguin tour is A$119.20 and leaves Melbourne at 2 pm, with entry to the Nobbies and the Penguin Parade included. It’s a late one, though: you’re back in the city around midnight, and dinner isn’t included. Pack a jumper, because the headland gets windy.
Christmas 2027 public holidays: nine days off for three days of leave
Christmas falls on a Saturday this year, which is better than it sounds. Christmas Day is Saturday 25 December and Boxing Day is Sunday 26, so every state gives you Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 off as well. Take Wednesday 29 to Friday 31 December and you’ve got nine days, from Saturday 25 December to Sunday 2 January.
Not every state works the same way. Queensland has a part-day holiday from 6 pm on Christmas Eve, and South Australia and the NT start theirs at 7 pm, with the same 7 pm part-day on New Year’s Eve in SA and the NT. In Tasmania, Boxing Day is Tuesday 28 December, and Sunday 26 isn’t a holiday.
For where to go,
Fiji is the easy beach option, with Sydney to Nadi sale fares starting around A$620 return. New Zealand suits mountains and lakes, and sale fares from Sydney and Melbourne have dipped to around A$500 return. Christmas weeks cost more than those sale prices, so book early.
Trip ideas and rough costs in AUD
Trip | Best break | Time you need | Ballpark cost |
|---|
Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto) | Easter | 10 days (4 leave days) | Flights from about A1,500 return |
Bali | Easter or Anzac Day | 7 to 10 days | Flights about A$1,050 to A$1,500 return |
New Zealand | Easter or Christmas | 9 to 10 days | Sale fares from about A$500 return |
Fiji | Christmas | 9 days (3 leave days) | Sale fares from about A$620 return from Sydney |
Gold Coast | Anzac Day to May Day (QLD, NT) | 10 days (4 leave days) | Hotels from about A$171 a night |
Great Ocean Road, Blue Mountains, Phillip Island | Any long weekend | 1 to 3 days | Day tours from about A$112 |
Treat these as starting points. Sale fares move fast, and Easter and Christmas weeks cost more.
2027 leave planning Australia: book early and check school dates
Book the Easter and Christmas to New Year windows first. They’re the two stretches where flights and hotel rates climb earliest, so lock in your leave and your bookings together. Where you can, pick free-cancellation fares and rooms in case approvals shift.
Roads fill up too. Expect heavy traffic out of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane on the afternoon before each long weekend, and again on the Monday return. Leaving Thursday night or early Friday can save you hours.
School holidays 2027 Australia differ by state, so families should check their own education department. Victorian and Queensland government schools finish Term 1 on Thursday 25 March, so the Easter break kicks off their holidays. NSW schools run to Friday 9 April, so NSW families usually travel after Easter. You can check the official
NSW term dates,
Victorian term dates and
Queensland term dates before you book.
Klook Tip: Independent and Catholic schools can run to slightly different dates, so confirm with your school before booking.
FAQs about Australia public holidays 2027
How many public holidays are there in Australia in 2027?
Seven are national: New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Once you add each state’s own days, most people get around 8 to 11 weekday holidays, with Tasmania at the lower end and the ACT at the top. That count leaves out show days and other regional holidays, so check your state’s list on Fair Work’s page.
Is there a public holiday for Anzac Day 2027 since it falls on a Sunday?
Yes, but only some states give you a Monday off. NSW, the ACT, Queensland, the NT and WA have Monday 26 April as a public holiday. Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania list Anzac Day on Sunday 25 April only, with no substitute.
When is the Easter long weekend in 2027?
It runs from Good Friday, 26 March, to Easter Monday, 29 March. That’s four days off in every state, and Easter Saturday and Sunday are holidays in most states too (WA skips the Saturday, Tasmania skips both). Take Tuesday 30 March to Friday 2 April off and you’ll have ten days in a row.
When is King’s Birthday 2027 in each state?
It’s Monday 14 June in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and the NT. Queensland holds it on Monday 4 October, and Western Australia on Monday 27 September (some WA regions use a different date). That gives Queensland and WA a long weekend later in the year, while everyone else gets theirs in mid-June.
What are the long weekends in 2027 in Australia?
Every state gets New Year’s Day (1 to 3 January), Easter (26 to 29 March) and Christmas (25 to 28 December). Beyond that it depends on where you live: King’s Birthday on 14 June for most states, Labour Day on 4 October in NSW, the ACT and SA, and Melbourne Cup on 2 November in Victoria. Australia Day falls on a Tuesday, so it only becomes a long weekend if you take Monday 25 January off.
What happens when a public holiday falls on a weekend in Australia?
It depends on the state and the holiday, because each state and territory sets its own rules. In 2027, Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall on a Saturday and Sunday, and every state gives you Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December as additional days. Anzac Day on a Sunday works differently by state, with a Monday off in NSW, the ACT, Queensland, the NT and WA but not in Victoria, SA or Tasmania.
Is Melbourne Cup Day a public holiday in 2027?
Yes, but only in Victoria. Melbourne Cup Day falls on Tuesday 2 November, and some regional areas hold the holiday on a different date. Since it’s a Tuesday, many people take Monday 1 November off for a four-day weekend.
Ready to plan your 2027 days off?
Pick the break that suits you, then put your leave request in early. Picture it: leave approved for 30 March to 2 April, a morning at the Twelve Apostles, or a late night watching penguins come in at dusk. Block your leave dates in your calendar this week, then check stays and day trips for those dates before Easter and Christmas fill up.
