What to expect
Discover Banff after dark on a five-hour tour with a local guide and no more than 10 guests. Start at a lookout above town, then take a 45-minute guided lakeshore walk at Lake Minnewanka, learning about local wildlife, history and Indigenous connections.
Continue to Johnson Lake for approximately 90 minutes of stargazing. Settle into heated chairs with blankets, hand and toe warmers, and tea or hot chocolate. Explore the night sky using shared binoculars, a telescope and interactive star maps to identify constellations.
Round-trip transport from designated Banff or Canmore pickup points is included. Headlamps and hiking poles are provided, with winter ice cleats when needed. Walking involves uneven terrain after dark. Stargazing depends on conditions; Northern Lights are not guaranteed.

I was afraid of bears at night, so even though I had a rental car, I booked this and was extremely satisfied. Canada doesn't have an overwhelming amount of stars, but just being able to see the Rocky Mountains and the night sky together was wonderful. The service was also great, including hot chocolate, heated seats and blankets, constellation viewing with a tablet, headlamps, explanations of Banff, and observing the moon through a telescope. The weather is the key factor, so be sure to check it before booking!
The tour guide arranged the attractions and schedule very well. At the final lakeside stargazing spot, heated camping chairs and hot cocoa were provided, and the explanations of the various constellations and the Milky Way were extremely detailed!
The tour guide service was very good, the small group was peaceful and quiet, and the stargazing locations were all excellent. There were heated seat cushions and hot chocolate, though it was still cold in the winter. Unfortunately, the guide only spoke English, so we couldn't understand the astronomical explanations.

By the lake, free from light pollution, our guide gave a wonderful introduction to the night sky. The Big Dipper was clearly visible—a truly great experience.
