Tokyo: Shinjuku Calligraphy Workshop & Scroll

This klook activity is a five star experience for me! Manami-sensei was a patient and very capable teacher and it is partly because of her that this activity left a lasting and good impression. I think this activity is definitely value for time and money: I learned a new skill, discovered how my name is written in japanese language, understood a facet of japan culture better and took home a lot of unique souvenir items from my Japan trip. Overall, this is an activity I will do again, if given the chance. The studio (if you follow the guide here in klook) is easy to find, just be mindful that the studio is not ground level! You have to take a cute elevator that is accessible via pedestrian sidewalk beside the liquor store to get there. Taking home a shirt with your personalized, written by your own hand calligraphy, is also not priced in but I think worth it if you decide to get it. All the studio’s personnel were welcoming and helpful, so no issues at all, if you plan to do this solo.

I had an amazing teacher Ai. I really enjoyed my class of calligraphy with her. She told me something about history and then explained technique of writing. I could do it whole day, it is a nice relaxation too.

This workshop was both fun and informative. Hiromi was a fun translator and was very helpful. The Master answered all of my questions and was patient with a beginner. I would do this type of class again.

The 2 hours I spent here were super good and highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to understand Japanese crafts deeply. The instructor was very well prepared and gave us a brief intro about the scripts and helped us thoroughly, so much so he drew a guide for me separately for a kanji I was having difficulty writing. Even went around the class and demonstrated how to get the brush strokes right. Big shout-out to our guide Nono, she was really sweet and translated Japanese literally word to word and was very enthusiastic throughout the class and guided us very well!!!

We had a wonderful experience with our caligraphy lecturer Hiromi. She explained everything in detail, was really patient with all our questions and is definitely expert in this field. She was friendly, waited for us in front of 7/11 and had great english so whole experience went fluently

Really enriching experience! We learned so much about the katakana and kanji of Japanese script, both my son and myself took a great deal away from this experience. Sosen, the master calligrapher, and Airi, our English-speaking guide, were very approachable and knowledgeable. Writing our own names on t-shirts was a welcome keep-sake. A great family experience.

I had a great experience with Yui the translator and Sousen Master. I was really interested in the process and history. They were able to answer all of my questions. A must expirience if you want to learn more about their culture and writing. Thanks to both of you. 🙏🏽

we had a small private calligraphy class with the sensei/sonnen and Yui. They were both patient, friendly, and helpful as they guided me, my wife, and our 9 year old daughter through the brush strokes of traditional calligraphy. we learned about the different types of Japanese characters (Hiragana, katakana, and kanji) as well as the different variations/styles of how to “draw” the characters. It was a great experience, from making the ink with the clay ink tablets and ink sticks, to practicing our names on traditional washi paper, and even getting to make t-shirts. great shop, nice people, and a fun time!
