What to expect
What makes this tour unique is its deep focus on the origin, history, and culture of sumo, combined with live expert commentary during the matches. This small-group Grand Sumo Tournament Tour in Tokyo (maximum 10 travelers) is led by a knowledgeable sumo guide and consists of two parts:
Walking tour in Ryogoku, the heart of sumo. Visit historical landmarks and see sumo stables from outside while learning the background of Japan’s national sport.
Sumo arena experience, where you watch the bouts with real-time commentary that brings the matches to life.
There’s also a 15:00–18:00 option for those who wish to join only the viewing part. Optional chanko dinner—the hearty stew eaten by wrestlers—is available after the matches.

Reviews
I was very happy with this experience. I'm a big sumo fan so I enjoyed every minute. Our guide - Aki - is very knowlegeble and nice lady. I recommend her.
The Sumo tour was awesome. Kensan was EXTREMELY knowledgeable about Japanese history, customs and Sumo. I was incredibly impressed with the tour in general, the information he shared and the Sumo song he sang was incredible. I really appreciated his passion for the Sumo experience. He and I were cheering in synchronicity. So fun! Everyone in the group was friendly, welcoming and we all had a blast. Highly recommend this tour, and I have a newfound passion for Sumo. We were all cheering Onosato, and I literally turned on the TV in my hotel and they were covering the Onosato match on the news! I'm so happy to have been a part of it and cheering on Onosato! An incredible tour followed by an incredible set of Sumo matches. I cannot stress enough how fun this was with all the proper background. We even saw the stable owner get into a taxi before leaving the stable for the tournament! Kensan was great.
This Sumo tournament was absolutely fantastic! I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. The guide was excellent, and the entire experience was top-notch. thank you
Jeff our tour guide was awesome! he was very knowledgeable and always kept us up to date on who was fighting next! he was always looking out for our best interests! 100% recommend!
Everything was great all in all. Very nice guide, great experience with only small groups. Dinner was already prepared on arrival. Would have been great if guide would have stayed a little longer to explain the traditional food. Besides that, all good.
Good to know
This tour comes in several options depending on the combination of the following:
- Landmark/history tour 13:00 - 15:00 This is a walking tour around Ryogoku, a sumo town, to increase the joy of watching the tournament by learning a lot about sumo from your knowledgeable guide beforehand.
- Viewing bouts in the arena 15:00 - 18:00 Enjoy the bouts as you listen to the real-time commentaries from your expert guide, and get excited as you join the excited spectators!
- Chanko dinner option This nutrient dish is the centerpiece of sumo wrestlers’ diets to gain weight and muscles to build their bodies.
- Chair option
We will use chair seats on the balcony in the arena; if you opt to stay on the first floor, you would need to sit on a flat floor.
Chair option means you can sit comfortably in a chair throughout the tournament, unlike box seats on the first floor where you will be seated on cusions placed on the floor. For this tour, you will be seated in chair B or C; the seating map in the photo section shows the detailed location. Chair B seats have a couple of advantages over chair C seats: they are closer to the ring, larger, and softer.
