Only have 24 hours in the Eternal City for your Europe trip? Don’t worry, you can still experience the best of Rome in a day (just set that alarm a little earlier 😉).
You’ll still check off the city’s popular landmarks like the Colosseum and the Spanish Steps, snap those postcard photos, and even squeeze in a gelato (or two) along the way.
We’ve mapped out a detailed, easy-to-follow Rome one-day itinerary below, so keep reading and start planning your perfect day in Rome!
Morning: Start at the Colosseum
Start your morning at the Colosseum. And yes, it really is as epic as it looks in photos. Arrive around 8:30 AM so you can beat the tour groups and the midday heat.
But, there might be lines at the entrance, so it’s best to book a Colosseum skip-the-line experience, which allow you to go right past the long ticket queue. Once you step inside, you’ll be standing in the same arena where gladiators once fought thousands of years ago.
It’ll take about an hour to explore this massive amphitheater (or a bit more, if you decide to explore the underground area as well).
Late Morning: Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
From the Colosseum, walk straight into the Roman Forum using your combo ticket. Follow the main paths and check out key sights like the Arch of Titus and the Temple of Saturn. You’ll mostly be walking through ruins, so take your time and use the maps posted around the area.
After exploring the Forum, make your way uphill to Palatine Hill. The views from the top are worth the climb, and there are shaded areas where you can catch your breath. Plus, you’ll get one of the best photo spots of your entire Rome itinerary!
Klook Tip: A reusable water bottle will be your best friend in Rome! There are public fountains (called "nasoni") with clean drinking water throughout the city.
Midday: Walk to the Pantheon
Next, walk about 20 minutes to the Pantheon. The route takes you through the historic center, so this is a good time to enjoy the streets.
Once you arrive, admire the giant columns out front before heading inside. Look straight up at the dome and the open oculus that’s the main highlight. You don’t need long here; about 30 minutes is enough to walk around and take it in.
If you still want some flexibility in choosing your schedule, you can secure tickets to attractions of your choice with the Klook Pass Rome, and lock in on the specific date you’ll visit later on.
Lunch: Piazza Navona
A 5 minute walk away, you’ll reach Piazza Navona. Explore around the square to see the three fountains, especially the Fountain of the Four Rivers in the center.
After that, grab lunch at one of the restaurants around the piazza or in the nearby side streets (they’re usually less expensive). This is a good time to recharge, and rest your feet.
Early Afternoon: Trevi Fountain & Spanish Steps
After lunch, walk to the Trevi Fountain. It’s usually crowded, so expect to move slowly as you get closer. But, when you do reach the fountain, toss a coin over your right shoulder with your right hand, it’s the classic tradition that’s said to bring you back to Rome one day.
If you want to explore more around the area, head to the Trevi Fountain Underground, also known as Vicus Caprarius. This archaeological site sits beneath the streets and shows you the ancient ruins hidden below modern Rome. You’ll see old stone walls, artifacts, and even parts of an ancient water system that still feeds the fountain today.
Klook Tip: It gets crowded here, keep an eye on your belongings and consider visiting from the sides for a quieter view.
From Trevi, walk about 10 minutes to the Spanish Steps. Climb to the top for a view over the square below. You’re not allowed to sit on the steps anymore, but you can still take photos. If you need a break, grab a quick espresso or gelato from nearby shops.
Late Afternoon: Vatican City
Take the metro to Vatican City (Ottaviano station is the closest). From there, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the entrance of the Vatican Museums. Once inside, follow the main visitor route, which takes you through galleries filled with sculptures, tapestries, and famous Renaissance artwork.
At the end of the museum route, you’ll enter the Sistine Chapel. This is the highlight for most visitors, so take a few minutes to look up and study the ceiling painted by Michelangelo.
Klook Tip: There’s a dress code inside Vatican City since it’s a religious site, so do wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees if you plan to enter!
Evening: Trastevere
End your day at Trastevere, a charming neighborhood filled with delicious eateries. Walk around the neighborhood and pick a restaurant that looks busy with locals (that’s usually a good sign). If choosing a spot feels overwhelming, you can join a Trastevere food tour instead. A guided tour takes you straight to some of the neighborhood’s best eats!
