If you think you already know everything about Rome’s most famous landmark, think again. The Colosseum is full of wild stories, clever engineering, and dramatic moments from ancient times. In this guide, we’re sharing 5 facts about Colosseum that go beyond the usual textbook stuff.
Here’s a sneak peek at what you’ll learn:
    • Its original (totally different) name

    1. It wasn’t always called the Colosseum

Plot twist: its original name was the Flavian Amphitheatre. It was named after Emperor Vespasian and the Flavian family, who built it. The name “Colosseum” likely came from a giant statue (a “colossus”) of Emperor Nero that stood nearby.

    2. There was a hidden trapdoor system

Under the arena is the hypogeum, a maze of tunnels, cages, and lifts. Gladiators and wild animals were raised up through trapdoors using pulley systems. To the crowd, it probably looked like fighters and lions appeared out of nowhere.
Today, you can even explore this hidden area on a Colosseum underground tour, which gives you a close-up look at the tunnels beneath the arena.

    3. It survived earthquakes, fires, and lightning

Over the centuries, the Colosseum has been hit by lightning, damaged by fires, and shaken by major earthquakes. In fact, that huge missing chunk of the outer wall? Much of it collapsed during a powerful earthquake in the 14th century.
These Colosseum history facts make it even more impressive. Even after all that damage, it’s still standing.

    4. They flooded it for naval battles

Yes, you read that right. In its early days, the arena may have been flooded to stage mock naval battles, known as naumachiae
It’s one of the most surprising and interesting facts about the Roman Colosseum. When you’re walking across dry stone today, it’s hard to imagine boats floating right where you’re standing.

    5. It used to shine with marble and gold

Today, the Colosseum looks rough and weathered. But back in ancient Rome, it was covered in smooth marble and decorated with bronze and possibly gold details. It would have looked bright and polished, not like the ruins we see now.
