I took two half-day whale watching tours with different companies in Hervey Bay. The Tasman Venture tour was in the afternoon, departing at 1:30 PM and returning around 5:30 PM. Between the two tours, I highly recommend Tasman Venture. Their boat is very fast, possibly the fastest in Hervey Bay, which allows them to quickly approach whales when they surface for closer observation. The boat has enthusiastic guides who constantly update passengers on the whales' current location, help count down to when a whale will surface, and predict and explain whale behavior. Whale watching certainly involves an element of luck, but everyone on board that day had a fantastic time. The whales came very close and were incredibly active; my family even got splashed by the water from a whale's tail fin hitting the surface.
