The driver will pick you up at your hotel in a five-seater sedan. In mid-April, the temperature at Ijen Volcano in the early morning is around 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit). You can wear a short-sleeved shirt and a light, warm jacket. The mountain road is steep, and you'll likely sweat a lot during the climb. You can take breaks in stages, depending on your stamina. From the entrance at 1,800 meters (5,905 feet) above sea level, you'll ascend to the summit at 2,300 meters (7,546 feet). There may be an occasional pungent sulfur smell; you can choose whether to rent a gas mask before departing. The sunrise and sea of clouds are incredibly beautiful. However, since the sulfur minerals are owned by an energy company, and workers are employed to mine and extinguish fires, you won't be able to see large areas of blue flame. Nevertheless, the burning sulfur is an unprecedented and stunning sight. We recommend arranging this trip separately from Mount Bromo, allowing for rest before continuing. A two-day/one-night or three-day/two-night trip involves a significant physical load.

Review for: Private Tour from Surabaya with Chinese Speaking Guide

I had a lot of fun thanks to the guide Dino and driver Febri. They fetched me from my hotel in Surabaya at 6pm before we start our road trip to Ijen🙃The journey took 6 hours and thanks to Febri amazing driving skill we arrived safely and on time. The actual hike starts only at 2am since that is the allowed time for visitors to enter the area. So we all eat at the restaurant there to kill time. It was very cold🥶but you’ll be sweating along the hike. The jacket will be useful once you reach the peak and waiting for the sunrise. The trail is good and easy to manage although you need to be quite fit to finish the hike. The gas mask help a lot once you’re at the top but the sulfur irritated my eyes so i skip the blue fire. The whole experience was fun. Many thanks to Dino for the guide and help along the hike. We managed to nab a good spot for sunrise view. It was foggy the whole time we were there so we have to wait for a while before the turquoise lake is visible from the top. It finally shows itself just before i start my descend. It was so pretty! Definitely worth the hike.

We had a pleasant experience despite the persistent drizzle throughout the night. Our guide Sony was awesome in making sure we were safe and comfortable. Although we didnt get to see the blue flames due to the rain, Sony brought us down to see where the sulfur and smoke came from and we were able to see it upclose. It wouldnt have been possible if there wasnt any rain so i might return for a second trip in a better season (May-July). The tour was well organised and planned and everything went smoothly except the jam which caused our journey to be doubled. Atleast we were able to get a good rest by bringing pillows from the hotel onto the car ride as its the same car that drives us back too

Driver IKHSAN drove 14 hours round trip from Malang to Ijen Volcano. The car was comfortable and I slept well. Even though it was a long time, I was tired and was able to fall asleep well. The mountain was slippery due to volcanic ash, but the guide continued to take care of us so that we could hike safely.

Our trip to Ijen Volcano was absolutely unforgettable, thanks to our amazing driver Rully and our fantastic guide Yudi. Rully was punctual, professional, and always ensured we were comfortable and safe throughout the journey. Yudi was not only knowledgeable about the volcano and its unique blue flame, but also incredibly warm and attentive. He helped us capture stunning photos, shared fascinating stories about the region, and made sure we understood everything by translating when needed. Their combined efforts made this adventure smooth, memorable, and truly special. We couldn’t have asked for a better team — thank you both for such a wonderful experience!

Although many reviews said that never expected the magnificient of ijen’s crater blue fire, we had a wonderful experience to climb Ijen for more than three hours back and forth. The organiser team equipped us with lights and masks and gave us useful information before we climbed. Overall it was exhausted but fun! Thanks!

The tour contacted very soon after booking to clarify timing / date. Our car from Surabaya to Ijen broke down on highway but thankfully the driver had safety first in mind, he quickly coordinated for towtruck and replacement car to ensure we could continue our journey in time. The replacement driver and local tour guide are both nice and welcoming as well. Thou the trip was exhausting, it was rewarding

FAQs

Q: Where is the Ijen Crater located?

A: Ijen Crater is at the top of Mount Ijen which is included in the Ijen Tourism Park Nature Reserve area, Bondowoso Regency and Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, Indonesia.

Geographically, Ijen Crater is a crater lake that has a high acid level with an area of around 5 hectares and a depth of up to 200 meters.

Q: When is the best time to climb Ijen Crater?

A: To see the natural phenomena in the Ijen Crater to the fullest, you should take the Ijen Tour in the early morning until just before sunrise. The phenomenon of blue fire (Ijen Blue Fire) is only witnessed when the surrounding conditions are completely dark. The best time to watch blue fire is from 02:00 to 04:00 in the morning.

Don't stop there, you can continue by watching the sunrise at the Ijen Crater, which is also an attraction for tourists.

Q: Is the Ijen Crater climbing route quite difficult?

A: The path that must be taken to arrive at Ijen Crater is quite uphill. It is recommended that you prepare your physical condition as best as possible before visiting Ijen Crater.

If you use a private vehicle to go to the climbing post, it's also a good idea to check the condition of the vehicle to ensure your journey is safe.

Q: What are the temperature or weather conditions at Ijen Crater?

A: If you have ever visited Bromo, the situation is not much different. Temperatures can approach 5 degrees Celsius from May to September. Sometimes temperatures can be quite extreme.

Prepare warm clothes when you visit Ijen Crater. Always wear a head covering, gloves and a mask to ward off the strong smell of sulfur.

Apart from that, it is recommended that you not remain silent. You should keep moving to keep your body temperature warm.

Q: Are there food or drink vendors available at Ijen Crater?

A: You can find a coffee shop or food stall in the parking area (Paltuding). If you don't bring personal supplies, please rest for a moment before or after climbing by enjoying a warm drink.

While climbing, you will also find a surprise at km 2. There is a hut that provides drinks such as tea or coffee. You can warm yourself for a moment if you feel cold while climbing.

If you're lucky, you can also chat with the sulfur miners who stop by to weigh their results.

Q: How far is the hike to Ijen Crater?

A: From the entrance gate to the top of Ijen Crater is approximately 3 km. The climbing route that will be taken is approximately 2 km of winding terrain and 1 km of flat terrain. Because you will be climbing in quite cold weather, prepare your physical condition as best as possible.

Please pay attention to each person's health condition, especially for those who have respiratory problems or heart disease.

There's no need to carry too much luggage, just prepare as little as possible so it's not too heavy when climbing.

Q: What are the Points of Interest for Ijen Crater?

A: Ijen Crater is famous for the 'Blue Fire' phenomenon; or the distinctive blue flame. This phenomenon only occurs in 2 places in the world, namely in Iceland and in the Ijen Crater. This blue fire is what attracts and attracts visitors to stop by the Ijen Crater.

The gas that appears is not very clearly visible, especially in dark conditions. Therefore, make sure to wear a mask when watching blue fire so that your breathing is not disturbed.

Apart from the blue fire, tourists who climb Mount Ijen can also see the beautiful sunrise view.

From the peak of Mount Ijen, climbers can also see other mountains that are part of the Ijen Mountains complex, namely Mount Raung, Mount Suket, Mount Ranti, and Mount Merapi on the east side of the peak of Mount Ijen.

Q: Can you watch the sunrise at Ijen Crater?

A: Apart from the blue fire, watching the sunrise at the Ijen Crater is also an attraction for tourists. Visitors only need to climb about 500 meters to be able to see the Ijen Crater viewpoint from the other side.

Of course, you have to plan your visit in the early morning to be able to watch the sunrise at Ijen Crater. You shouldn't miss this opportunity, because the sunrise at Ijen Crater is no less beautiful than the sunrise view at Penanjakan, Bromo.

Q: What is the best way to visit Ijen Crater?

A: You can go straight to the Mount Ijen climbing gate to get to Ijen Crater. However, it is highly recommended to book a tour package from Klook before visiting Ijen Crater. With affordable package prices, you will enjoy various facilities including pick-up from your hotel or departure location.

You can choose departures from three different cities, namely Malang, Surabaya, or Banyuwangi. Apart from that, you can also choose for yourself whether to take an open trip or a private tour.
