Our recent road trip from Queenstown to Christchurch was nothing short of spectacular. This journey is a masterclass in NZ’s natural beauty, offering landscapes that feel pulled straight from a movie set. Leaving Queenstown, the drive through the tussock-clad Lindis Pass is hauntingly beautiful. We made a quick stop in Omarama—before the scenery shifted into the dramatic Mackenzie Country. Lake Pukaki & Mt Cook: Nothing prepares you for the first glimpse of Lake Pukaki. The water is an impossibly bright, milky turquoise. Following the shoreline toward Aoraki/Mt Cook was the highlight; seeing the snow-capped peak of NZ highest mountain reflected in the water is a memory I’ll keep forever. Lake Tekapo: A stop at the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd is essential. The contrast of the stone chapel against the vibrant blue lake is stunning. The final stretch through the Canterbury Plains into Christchurch offered a peaceful transition from the rugged alps to the "Garden City."
The staff is friendly. The tour is outsourced to Cheeky Kiwi Travel. If you're staying at a popular location, there might be different Cheeky Kiwi Travel vehicles arriving to pick people up in the morning, so make sure you get on the right one. The journey is long, but the natural scenery of the South Island is beautiful. Since it's all outdoors with hiking trails, the UV radiation is high, so remember to wear sunscreen and a hat.
We booked a Queenstown to Christchurch transfer tour for June 26th. From the start, communication was seamless; the reception team quickly answered all pre-trip questions and sent helpful safety reminders. Everything was perfectly well-prepared. The driving was exceptionally safe. Our morning guide was high-energy, sharing great local stories. The guides clearly love their jobs and the NZ landscape, taking us to secret viewpoints with plenty of photo time. Their boss even called ahead during the trip to check road conditions after recent snow—a thoughtful touch. They also saved our day at Mt Cook by providing ice spikes when we realized our running shoes weren't enough, alongside water and snacks. The transition to the next leg was seamless. The lady who took over was highly responsible, ensuring we forgot nothing and waiting with us. Finally, our Christchurch driver safely dropped everyone off right at their respective hotels on time. The price-performance ratio is very high, it's especially fun, the scenery along the way is particularly beautiful, as if you've come to the world of Lord of the Rings, our two tour guides are also very enthusiastic and thoughtful, it would be even better if the vehicles could be improved.
A full-day road trip! But I wasn't bored at all! You can fully experience the powerful nature of New Zealand's South Island. You can stop at various spots, so I think it's quite a valuable tour. I am Japanese and participated alone. I wasn't very confident in my English, so I was worried about whether I could understand the meeting time, but the driver kindly told me separately in easy-to-understand English, so I was able to spend my time with peace of mind! Thank you so much. During the road trip, they explained a lot about NZ. If I could understand English... I think I would have enjoyed it more (laughs). Bottled water and snacks were provided in the car and were free of charge. I was very grateful for this as there was a lot of walking involved in the trekking.
Kristina - our tour guide from Queenstown to Mt.Cook. She was lovely and her knowledge with the area along the way to Mt.Cook is superb (I loved the story of the Sheep 🐑). I learned alot ☺️. Clive - tour guide from Mt.Cook to Christchurch. He was a great guide too 😄
the driver was so punctual in picking us up. he helped us in our baggages. he is so knowledgable in history of queenstown and nearby cities. he discussed a lot until i fall asleep… he dropped us in some picture spots and discuss to us the transfer that we need in the mount cook. the next driver is also very diligent in discussing stories along our way.
What I really appreciated about this tour was that it uniquely offers many sightseeing spots while including a fuss-free transfer from Queenstown to Christchurch. There is also the option to trek at Mt Cook or visit the cafe for a nice lunch. However, the journey was quite uncomfortable because the 15-seater van was fully packed - and I was certainly too close for comfort to an uncle in the single seat who kept popping to his left and right to take photos ;_; Worst of all, when we reached Lake Tekapo & Church of the Good Shepherd, we only had FIFTEEN MINUTES. During which, I had to use the toilet, and there was ONE functioning toilet, and an extremely long line T_T I spent all 15 minutes queuing for the toilet, and didn’t even make it across the bridge to see the Church up close. So my memory of Lake Tekapo will, unfortunately, just be of queuing for the one toilet cubicle. Maybe in future I’ll just fly and then book a day trip instead…

Driver and tour guide Collin and Carl are very professional and caring. They told us everything about NZ and you will never be bored during the long trip. The timing is perfect and we have a detailed visit in Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo. The 1 hour hiking in Mount Cook is perfect for beginners. It is very good when you need to travel from Queenstown to Christchurch. Though the van was broken in Lake Tekapo, Carl treated us a meal and let us have more time to visit the Lake Tekapo. Will certainly recommend to everyone to join the tour.
