Tokyo: Shinjuku Calligraphy Workshop & T-Shirt Creation

Both our translator, NoNo (not sure about spelling) and our instructor were amazing. Very knowledgeable, warm and supportive as we practised our writing. We wild highly recommend this experience to understand more of the traditional Japanese culture. Wish could do again!

I had SO much fun during this workshop, I’m seriously considering doing calligraphy even after. Sosen sensei was very thorough, gentle, and knowledgeable. It’s for everyone, especially people who want to be more in touch with Japanese culture and not just do shopping or shrine hopping! Such a nice way to spend a chilly afternoon. My favorite part is when you get to choose the Kanji spelling (and meanings!) of your name. He made custom calligraphy of that, and now I’ll hang it up my house hehe.

Great workshop! so glad I made time for this on my trip. The guide, Haruto was pleasant & is great at translating. Highly recommend if you would like to learn a little history from a master calligrapher & leave with a great souvenir. :)

The 2 hours I spent here were super good and highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to understand Japanese crafts deeply. The instructor was very well prepared and gave us a brief intro about the scripts and helped us thoroughly, so much so he drew a guide for me separately for a kanji I was having difficulty writing. Even went around the class and demonstrated how to get the brush strokes right. Big shout-out to our guide Nono, she was really sweet and translated Japanese literally word to word and was very enthusiastic throughout the class and guided us very well!!!

The instructor, Hiro-san, was super nice and approachanle! My friend and I enjoyed this calligraphy workshop so much. We learned about history, tools, and even japanese words! We wrote our favorite Japanese phrases at the end of the activity. We took home everything we did as a souvenir. It was a very relaxing experience. I highly recommend it!

I had an amazing teacher Ai. I really enjoyed my class of calligraphy with her. She told me something about history and then explained technique of writing. I could do it whole day, it is a nice relaxation too.

This workshop was both fun and informative. Hiromi was a fun translator and was very helpful. The Master answered all of my questions and was patient with a beginner. I would do this type of class again.

We had a wonderful experience with our caligraphy lecturer Hiromi. She explained everything in detail, was really patient with all our questions and is definitely expert in this field. She was friendly, waited for us in front of 7/11 and had great english so whole experience went fluently

Really enriching experience! We learned so much about the katakana and kanji of Japanese script, both my son and myself took a great deal away from this experience. Sosen, the master calligrapher, and Airi, our English-speaking guide, were very approachable and knowledgeable. Writing our own names on t-shirts was a welcome keep-sake. A great family experience.

The workshop was a great experience. Sousen sensai was a friendly teacher who explained everything calmly and took time for each participant. Hiromi was a very nice translator with excellent English language skills who spread good cheer. We learned about the Japanese writing system and how to practice calligraphy with the appropriate materials. At the end, we were allowed to design our own T-shirts and take them home with us. We would definitely recommend this workshop!
