What to expect
Ookini Kimono has been deeply rooted in Kyoto for 7 years. Its staff are known for their friendliness and kindness, which is often cited by many customers as a key positive point. It is also a kimono experience store that practices "transparent pricing with no extra charges."
Since March 2024, Ookini's 5 branches have been successively listed on Klook. As of June 2025, they have accumulated over 25,000 orders and served over 50,000 travelers from Korea, Hong Kong, China, Europe, and the United States. On average, over 120 customers trust them daily.
Ookini Kimono also thoughtfully provides several free services, including: transparent pricing with no extra charges, free inter-store returns, free hotel returns, free luggage storage, free umbrella and warm jacket rentals, and free kimono stain insurance, allowing every customer to enjoy their experience with peace of mind.
If you are hesitant about your kimono choice, it is recommended to book the "600+ Styles Optional Plan." You can also freely upgrade according to your preferences upon arrival at the store (just pay the difference).
Ookini sincerely states: We highly value our customers’ experiences and would like to address negative reviews and areas that are easily misunderstood.
- "Furisode and Houmongi" are traditionally worn for ceremonies such as weddings in Japan, so their craftsmanship is very luxurious. Ookini's inventory is superior in the industry, attracting customers who are proposing, on their honeymoon, or looking for beautiful photos.
- Therefore, customers who book kimonos/yukatas may see others experiencing "Furisode and Houmongi" and easily misunderstand that "beautiful clothes cost extra money." In reality, these do not belong to "kimono/yukata."
- Individual staff members have excessively recommended "Furisode and Houmongi" to customers who booked photography sessions (believing they are more suitable for keepsakes). This has been internally rectified, and we apologize to our customers for this!
- Please note that some plans do not include elaborate hairstyles, makeup, or photography (the title indicates the scope of business).
- Misunderstandings regarding "kimono upgrade to furisode obi" and "men's hakama" have been addressed by providing booking options in the plans.
- A very important point: Please believe that kindness, friendliness, and valuing customer happiness are always Ookini Kimono's calling cards; moreover, transparent pricing is our persistence, and refusing assembly-line production and meticulously handling every fold of the garment is our guarantee.

Reviews
Reviews summaryWe had a wonderful time during this photo shoot experience! It was our first professional photo shoot, and as two friends, we weren't sure what to expect, but everything was very comfortable and enjoyable from start to finish. The location was excellent: a small, beautiful temple area with very few people around, which made the experience feel peaceful and special. The photographer gave simple and clear instructions for posing, which was especially helpful since we were complete beginners. We never felt awkward and were able to relax and have fun throughout the session. We are very happy with the original photos, which felt natural and captured the experience perfectly. The retouched photos (attached) were nice as well, especially with improvements such as the lighting, but we personally preferred many of the original shots because they felt more natural to us. Overall, this was a memorable experience, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for professional photos in Kyoto!
We had a great experience with this kimono rental service! As two friends visiting Kyoto, we booked the 10:00 AM slot and were a little concerned after reading some comments about it being crowded. While it was busy, it was much more organized than some reviews suggested, and everything ran smoothly. Visitors should expect the full process (choosing a kimono, getting dressed, selecting accessories, and having their hairstyle done) to take around 1 hour, especially during busy times. We felt this was completely reasonable given everything that is included. My friend wanted to wear a men's kimono, and the staff were very accommodating. Although her first color choice was unavailable in her size, they quickly suggested an alternative that she was very happy with. They were also able to do a hairstyle with my short hair, which I really appreciated. A special thank you to the staff member who seemed to be in charge. She was very efficient and gave excellent advice throughout the process.
I had the best experience with them. They gave me enough suggestions on which type of kimonos and obis would look good on me. They also assisted my husband with his Yakuta. The staff was super friendly inspite of being so busy. They gave me a couple of options for hairstyles and the final one turned out to be so beautiful. I would also want to give a special mention to photographer Paul, who clicked such beautiful pictures and guided us with poses and what to do throughout the entire process. Even the unedited photos were so pretty.
I forgot our photographer’s name but she was from Taiwan and she’s so nice and lovely. I have high expectations for photos so I was prepared to edit it on my own. Imagine my surprise when we received our photos and it did not need any editing at all. It was so gooooood. Kudos to the shop and our photographer that day! Thank you so much!
my husband & I booked this trip 1 day before we go. we depart in Kyoto & get off in Osaka. it was amazing experience with great tour guide (Anson), good time to experiences many cultured places in Kyoto. we had registered for kimono rental in advanced, & our tour guide has guided us very well to try on in 1 location & drop off in another location. this is 10/10 exprerience for us!
booked me and my sister for kimono rental and hairstyle. shop was super busy but staff were soo friendly even though we were a bit late to our appointment. staff were super helpful especially when figuring out how to pair all the accessories with the kimono(since it can be a bit overwhelming with all the options). me and my sister had so much fun, would definitely do again !
The workers are very approachable and experienced. The can communicate fluently in Mandarin and English. They were already attending to many customers when I was there yet I don't feel neglected nor being pushed to decide on my kimono design quickly. The person who assisted me was very helpful in giving recommendations on what to pair with my kimono. Since I wanted to do a photoshoot as well, she had recommended me to upgrade my Kimono (additional JPY10,000) which I did. Although the price exceeded my budget but I have no regrets at all as my kimono really turned out to be very pretty! My suggestion to others considering a photoshoot, just go straight for the premium kimono package so that you don't need to top-up.
Many of the staff speak Chinese, so there were no communication issues. I went on my birthday, and the price was very reasonable. My phone and power bank were dead at the time, and the shop was willing to lend me a charger, which was very friendly. If you're unsure about styling, the staff will even help you choose a belt. Last time in Tokyo, I spent over 300 Hong Kong dollars, and had to pay an extra 500 yen for a bag. This shop doesn't charge extra, which is excellent. Aside from the location being a bit far from the subway station, requiring a bus ride, everything else was superb. It was a fun first experience riding a Japanese bus. The kimonos are beautiful, and the hairstyles designed by the staff are gorgeous. I will definitely bring my friends back again.
It was a pretty good experience, and I think the hairstyle was the most worthwhile part; it was absolutely perfect. The clothes were also very nice. We had a package that only included clothes and a hairstyle, and the clothes in the package were already quite beautiful. However, I must say, there are additional costs for things like adding lace or bows. Still, it was acceptable. We added lace tied around the waist and a lace collar. Most of the staff were Chinese, and the person who did my hair was a Japanese lady, so there's no need to worry about communication issues; simple gestures and English were perfectly sufficient. Overall, it was a great experience; my hair was curled so well, haha! Oh, and there were accessories like small bags and parasols available, which were very pretty and made for a very elegant Kyoto lady look. I won't show my face to everyone, but wearing this while strolling through Kiyomizu-dera Temple was truly beautiful…
The shop was easy to find and had many kimono options. The staff were very helpful, with teams for welcoming guests, dressing in kimono, and doing hair and makeup. It was raining, but they gave us umbrellas. The only issue was the kimono shoes—they were not comfortable, so you can wear your own shoes if you prefer. There were also many other different accessories and props to choose from.
