At the end of last year, the National Health Commission (NHC) of China had announced the recategorisation of COVID-19 to a Class B disease, marking the end of the country's strict zero-COVID policy and quarantine requirements for inbound travellers in 2023. Travel restrictions into China has since been eased for Malaysians, except for one thing: all Malaysians were still required to have a visa before entering China.

Breaking News: China to allow Malaysian Citizens visa-free entry to the country for up to 15 days

On 24 November 2023, an announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China - starting from 1 December 2023 until 30 November 2024, passport holders from Malaysia as well as five other European countries can enter and stay in China without a visa for 15 days.
What does this mean in terms of travel restrictions into China? If all goes well, that officially means that Malaysians can travel visa-free into China for the next one year, starting this December! All travellers under this visa-free scheme are allowed to sightsee and explore China, visit friends or family, conduct business, and transit through the country, as long as it is within a 15-day period.
Read the official circular released by the ministry here.

    • Visits of 15 days & below: All Malaysians do not require a visa before entering China.
    • Visits of more than 15 days: All Malaysians are required to have a visa before entering China. You can obtain your visa from the Chinese Embassy in Kuala Lumpur or other countries, which permits a maximum visit duration of 60 days per entry.
    • Both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals will be able to enter China. The country does not impose any vaccination checks.
    • All individuals are no longer required to undergo COVID-19 tests before entering China.
    • All individuals are no longer required to submit the Health Declaration Form. However, it is necessary for those who have symptoms of infectious diseases (fever, cough, diarrhoea, rash, etc.) or have already suffered from infectious diseases to take the initiative to complete the form.
    • Masks are no longer required onboard flights into China and in public areas in the country, but are still mandatory in nursing homes and medical institutions.
