The Tottori Sand Dunes are a vast area of sand and gravel that spreads along the Sea of Japan coast in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, and are a typical coastal dune. Designated as a special protection area of San’in Kaigan National Park, it stretches 2.4km from north to south and 16km from east to west. It is the largest dune in Japan and is open to tourists. Additionally, when it includes areas that are not accessible to the general public, it boasts the second largest scale after the Sarugamori Sand Dunes (Shimokita District, Aomori Prefecture). In 1955 (Showa 30), it was regarded as a national natural monument; in 2007 (Heisei 19), it was regarded as one of Japan’s top 100 geological features. Along with Mt. Daisen, it is one of the symbols of Tottori Prefecture
