Excursão ao Mosteiro de Rila e à Igreja de Boyana saindo de Sofia

I have to say that this is excellent. The bus took a bit long to show up, but I was a bit early, which is fine. However, Krum & Hristo were excellent. Great from start to finish. I could not have asked for more. Hristo is cool; he seems like an experienced and smart person who knows the history. Book it. Just do it.

Wonderful day trip from hot Sofia to the cooler Rila Mountains. Boyana Church is a bit of a disappointment, but Rila is definitely worth every penny.

The Boyana Church, built in the 13th century. From the outside, it doesn't look particularly special, and I thought paying extra might not be worth it, but entering the church was like discovering a hidden paradise. The staff only allowed no more than ten tourists in at a time, then closed the door, making it quite mysterious. Inside, there were incredibly well-preserved and vibrant Orthodox frescoes. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed in ancient sites, not even with a mobile phone. The second attraction is Bulgaria's number one World Heritage Site, the Rila Monastery. The entire monastery consists of several multi-story buildings and an Orthodox church. The frescoes in the latter are magnificent, composed of a series of panels depicting the history of Orthodox Christianity. Whether gods, humans, or devils, all are painted with astonishing lifelikeness and realism. Although I have never seen gods or devils, I believe that their appearance must be exactly like this. Surrounding the church are three-story buildings with exterior walls designed in a zebra-like color scheme. Even if similar color combinations have been seen elsewhere, none possess the grandeur found here. Being amidst them felt like countless zebras were running circles around us.

If you opt for Rila Monastery only without Boyana Church, you will still get the chance to catch a glimpse of the exterior of Boyana Church as well as the garden around it. Rila Monastery is awesome with the paintings and it felt peaceful over there. Remember to prepare 50 cents to use the toilets or you can change it using the coffee machine outside the monastery. The tour agency added in another attraction after Boyana Church at no additional cost. Overall, it’s a great tour but we would prefer if there was time allocated for lunch.

The tour guide was very professional and friendly, managing the tour time perfectly. Their commentary along the way was engaging, and their explanations were detailed yet concise!

The monastery is not easily accessible, so this tour is worthwhile. The bakery prices are reasonable, and the mekitsa is fresh, hot, and delicious – definitely worth trying.

The entire journey was smooth, comfortable, and well-organized. The vehicle was clean and punctual, and the driver was professional, friendly, and drove safely throughout the trip. The timing was well planned, giving us enough time to explore Rila Monastery at a relaxed pace without feeling rushed. The tour guide also shared useful information along the way and was happy to answer questions, which made the experience even better. This transport tour is perfect for travelers who want a stress-free and reliable way to visit Rila Monastery without worrying about logistics. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Bulgaria!

The meeting point is easy to find, but it was difficult to locate our guide bus as the details provided in the email link did not match. However, they will send a message via WhatsApp to inform or help us find our guide. Our tour guide, Ms. Marina, is very passionate and will provide us with travel tips and information to help us enjoy the trip even more. If you are more interested in history, I suggest Rila Monastery, but not Boyana Church.

Amazing monastery with some of the most stunning frescoes you could imagine. Essential day trip from Sofia.

Meet and disperse at the parking lot behind the cathedral shown in the picture. Basically, whether you purchase transportation only, a guided tour, or an audio guide, you will be part of the same group, so the experience is consistent. The tour guide was very friendly, explained everything in detail and with patience, and provided ample free time. It was a great day trip. However, if your hotel or hostel offers a day trip at a similar price, you might want to consider that option, as traveling to and from the meeting point also takes some time.
