We had one of the old rooms and it was very charming and had a lovely view of Edinburgh Castle. The breakfast was excellent. The dining room is stellar. I'm kind of sad that they are re-modeling. My traveling companions had a "new" room and it doesn't have the charm of the old one.

Solo stay

While it is an old hotel with a few quirks, the food is excellent. The beds are comfortable. The staff are helpful. No complaints!

This is definitely an older hotel. Our room was large and the bathroom was well equipped with a shower bathtub that was huge. What sets this hotel apart is the great location. Walking distance to everything, including the royal mile, the train station and lovely park. I wish they had an ice machine so we didn't have to bug the bartender. Breakfast had real eggs to order. Yeah!!

A classic hotel. Excellent location. The main sites were within walking distance. The airport bus left from just across the hotel. The room was nice and spacious.

The noise from the water in the bathroom above was intrusive. Shower, sink or toilet, the sound of the water coming down the pipes made it sound like it was in the room. Difficult to get to sleep and woke us up when we were asleep.

We stayed in here for 3 nights, we arrived at 11 and expected to drop our bags off at the hotel and come back when our room was ready, but our was ready and could check in and go straight to our room, which was great and so unexpected. The hotel is very central to everything, with views to the front, we had a view to the side which unfortunately had building works going on, and will be for some time, but it didn't detract from our stay. Breakfast was good, everything you would need to start your day of exploring. Staff were very attentive, we popped into the lounge where they serve afternoon tea, that looked amazing but we only wanted tea/coffee and a scone before we caught our train home and they supplied it, the best scones I've tasted in a long while. Our room was refreshed every day, clean towels, bins emptied, bed made, the only thing I would say about the bathroom is that I had difficulty getting in and out the bath for a shower as I am short and the bath was high, be extra careful if your short or not as mobile as others. This hotel is not suitable for the disabled as it has steps and stairs to navigate before you reach the reception after that there is a lift. We had a great stay in this hotel, full of character and charm right in the middle of Edinburgh city, you couldn't wish for anything more, I hope one day we will return.
